Here's some pics of Sean Carroll's Yak-9. It is WWII fighter that was built a few years ago from original spare parts. It is number 4 of 9 such reconstructions, and a real sweet plane. Taken at the Langley AFB airshow with a 40D + 300 f/4L IS.

Good series! Who is building them?

Thanks. I don't know who actually built them. The PA announcer told the story about the newly built fighter, but didn't mention who built them. It doesn't say on Sean Carroll's website either.

I understand that they are still built in Russia and brought over. A new mod is to remove the air intake from the top of the cowling and move it to the root of the leading edge of the wing. They do look like a blast to fly.....

Great photos. From memory, I think they were being built brand new a few years back, the main difference from the original, being the use of an Allison engine?

This one obviously still has the intake on top of the cowling. According to Sean's website, it has an Allison V-12 1710 under it. I imagine it is a lot more powerful and reliable than the original Russian engines.

Thanks for the compliment, Jorgo.

Thanks! It was my second favorite demo this year, right after the F-22 demo. I see the F-22 everyday, but they're just landing and taking off. This was the first time I got to see what it can really do.

great work. now I wish I had gone. I did not want to fight the heat as I normally stay the day. And I got the same old shoots at the garden. Good work

Thank you. It certainly was hot, but I thought it was worth it. I got hundreds of photos. I just need to sort through the chaff. I have a bunch of real nice ones to post here, but I'm going to spread them out and make you guys wait.

I don't go to the garden as nearly as much as you guys do, but I'm already starting to look for the different photos out there. Getting tired of the same thing. I don't know how Duane does it so often!

They are under 500K compared to 1.5Mil for a Mustang. I remember seeing old ads for P-51's...$32000.00.....

In that case, I'll have to run right out and buy one :)
