would AF assist work on a bracket? say a 430ex?

The 580EX and 580EX II beams work fine on my bracket. I imagine the 430EX would be fine too.

The 550EX has no problem, either. Of course the OC-E2 (or OC-E3 or equiv.) cable is needed.

Just make sure both camera and flash are mounted straight so the AF assist light is aiming at the focus point.

I've heard about people who do have problems with this setup, so it's probably rather critical as far as alignment, and perhaps what kind of subject you are taking photos of, goes.
