Hi Bob - short answer is I don't really know. However I suspect it may be a memory issue, as many OS issues usually can be. Your 1GB of ram should be adequate, but it may not. Have you considered added more ram? It's really cheap now.
Also, are you running any other apps at the same time that may be hogging resources? Are other programs secretly loading at startup? You may want to check and see what's loading at boot. - Stu

Lots of reading here on the subject: http://www.google.co.nz/search?hl=en&q=windows+xp+data+execution+prevention&btnG=Google+Search&meta=&aq=0&oq=windows+XP+data+execution
But, it appears XP thinks there is some malicous trying to run on your system, and is working to prevent it.
Does this occur when browsing one folder in particular, or is it random?

seems to be a few certain ones...the thing that gets me is I have a compact and the 30d, and it appears to happen in the same folders with pics from both, so i cant narrow it down to one or the other.
having said all this i have turned DEP off in windows explorer and it seems to have stopped for the moment. *lets hope AVG does its job if there is a nasty!
*thanks for the help!

Might be a virus or some other malware, try hijackthis or some other scanner and see if they come up with something.
