View Full Version : white balance for mixed lighted gyms

I'll be shooting a bunch of basketball games in a mixed lighted gym. I'll have the usual gym (read dim) lighting as well as daylight coming through two windows, with possibly casting sun rays on the gym floor from time to time.
How would you tackle white balance in this situation?

I have shot that way quite a bit.
I adjust in in post, because every shot may have slightly different lighting.
Since I am not a pro, I get them to 'good enough' and stop.

Add strobes and you wont have WB issues... or shoot RAW and adjust in post. Not much else you can do.

Using PS and ACR - shoot raw and can use a calibration target or grey card. Shoot the calibration target / grey card multiple times in sequence. Later in post you'll save the sequence of target/grey card images as presets. Then in post (eg. Adobe Camera Raw) you can apply the proper color preset to color correct your image.

When I shoot a basketball game, I am usually in the same place for an entire half. I shoot in manual and raw. In post processing I work on one picture and then apply those setting to the rest of the pictures shot from that half of the court. This is not perfect but it usally gets the pictures to an acceptable point.
I do have an expodisc and have used that to set a custom white balance. This works up front but adjusting white balance in post processing is not that difficult if I can apply the settings to a large group of picutures.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
The RAW processing is above my head at this time since I stick with JPEG. I may end up trying RAW once I shake off my fears of it. I don't have a strobe setup. As far as shooting B&W, that's an interesting idea. I wonder if the parents will like them. I may try a few shots that way.
Cheers

Yep. Don't fear RAW. No big deal. Helpful in situations like this where the white balance is changing.
