did you try bringing it into photoshop to make it pop in color?

My process goes along the lines of photomatix to camera raw to photoshop

yes, try to enhance the colors, it will be much better.

Nice job for your first time. It needs more contrast and less haloing. I'd bring the strength down a few notches to reduce haloing and up the gamma to add contrast.
