What opportunities do people know of in those fields?

What are you getting your masters in? R&D generally means engineering...in this case, probably Optics or Electrical.

Probably most opportunities would be in industrial applications like microscopy and spectroscopy and stuff like that.

my masters is based on optics, specifically spectroscopy
