All,

I was at a local university shooting their baseball team play another university just for fun and to lean more how to shoot the sport. When then game was done, several parents came up to me asked if they could buy or "cover my expenses" for copies of pictures featuring their pride and joy. I am completely flattered (dispite the fact that they don't know if what I have is complete junk - hope it isn't but they don't know that yet). I am not in anyplace to be a part-time weekend warrior... just there to perfect my own personal style and learn.

So what is fare and equatible? At first I was just going to email them jpg's of the images free... but then I I didn't want to loose complete control of the images. I am sure you all have faced this before... I want to let the parents have pictures - I could tell how much it would mean to them - but I don't want to just to be the teams free photographer either.

Thanks all.....

First of all, I never shoot JPEG files.

If I am out doing something with friends, and if I shoot some photos, then afterward I will email some JPEG files (converted from RAW to TIF, edited, then to JPEG). However, I generally send files that are reduced resolution (like 600x600 pixels). That is good enough that they can see it or enjoy it, but nobody would be silly enough to try to get a quality print out of it. If they inquire about getting a full-res 8x10 print, then I will produce it for them for a "friendly discount price." If it is a stranger, then they get offered the full price.

The more suspicious I am of strangers, the lower the resolution of the JPEG that I send.

Full price could be $10, $20, $40, etc for an 8x10. I would try to get $20 or $25 american from an 8x10 and see how that goes.

Does anyone know if he should get the local universities permission first? Or would that not apply for family of the player?

Thanks... I like the idea of sending her low res proofs for free.. and if she wants more.... we can work out a fee for the prints.

I am hoping the school has no issues with this... I was thinking of contacting regardless to get permission to shoot the team. I am shooting womens LaCrosse on Wednesday and would like to knwo where I stand in case this comes up again.

thanks again.

If it's a competition, then chances are that all participants have signed a form agreeing to be photographed, videotaped put in newspaper... etc...

In that case, it's a contract between you and the parents. They hire you to shoot their kid...

If it's a practice... then I have no idea.

Disclaimer: I'm no layer, don't know anything and have very limited experience shooting sports.

If it is an NCAA school expect to get a cease & desist letter pretty soon.
