I think I'm going to try out some AA NiMh rechargables in my Canon flash units. Was wondering if any one knows whether or not a NiCad battery charger can be used for these. I've got a couple of NiCad chargers kicking around that I may as well put to use if possible.

hey Mark,

i would advise you against that. I believe NICAD's and NIMH's have different chemistry and the chargers use a different technique to find out if they are full or not..

if theres a sams club around ..they have nice Energizer NIMH 2500mah batteries plus a nice charger with it for cheap. (they work awesome..last forever)

It is not allowed to use NiMh battery's in a NiCad charger. It's dangerous and you can get explosions. Best thing to do is to buy a set of battery's whit the appropriet charger. They are mostly offered in a package and so you can't go wrong.

I have a charger that is switchable for NiCd or NiMH. Stupidly, I switched it the wrong way once, just to see what would happen, and I ended up with a battery that blew its seal and spewed crap all over. I don't recommend that.

Before you embark on a risky experiment you may want to check the price of a NiMH charger for 4 x AA cells. I don't think you will save enough by not buying one to make it worth the risk.

Ok, the Nicad charger is going into retirement. I don't want to take chances of ruining a set of batteries and a the NiMh chargers don't seem that expensive.

Thanks,

Best site for rechargeable batteries/chargers/info = Thomas Distributing. I got my AA there. Great.

I second the Thomas Distributing comment. The Maha 2300s have done VERY well so far. I bought 16 AAs and a charger... the charger came with AC and DC connections so I can charge a home or in the car. Flash recycle time on the 550EX was noticably faster than with off the shelf batteries and life seemed to be excellent. I'll put them through their paces at a wedding this coming weekend... hope they don't let me down! (If they do I'll just slap the 50mm 1.4 on :) )
