i'm sure i'll find it as i read this sub-forum more. but, how does one get started in the profession? (not saying i want to, just curious)

of course, i love the hobby. of course, i know its difficult to buy mac'n'cheese on a beginner's ransom. of course, i know "stock photography" is random, at best, until you have tens of thousands of shots circulating about.

i assume the web has helped a lot. but, i dont know the first thing about websites, and/or costs associated with setting them up. i dont even know how to copyright my limited stuff.

but, i do think it would be cool to have some stuff "out there," just in case someone actually wanted to buy a pic of mine.

can anyone point me in a decent direction towards getting started so i know better what to expect? many thanks for any help.

i just think having a "hobby"/passion that pays even a little would be more productive than sitting in front of a television.

I presume you're talking of selling prints or files of images you've already taken? This really won't make you much money. Assignments is where the money is - getting paid to take portraits in a studio, or covering an event, or photographing products for a company etc.

Websites run from $0 setup and a monthly hosting fee to 10s of thousands and hundreds a month in fees, depending on the quality of the design work, the complexity of the site and how much traffic it receives.

If you let us know a little more about your interests, the type of photos you'd like to sell and how much you're willing to invest I'm sure there are lots of people here who will be more than happy to give you advice.

well, off the top (like i said, more curious than serious)...

- i like nature photography, close-ups of flowers, landscapes, a little macro, wildlife, and, of course, birding.
- i dont know about the investment part because i was more thinking of setting up the most basic of sites, and, if someone happens to notice or requests a print, i would give them a copy fairly cheap. i dont suppose i would even make $10/mo consistently, because the effort on my part just isnt there.

i guess its one of those things where i would like to receive an order, while sleeping or working, come home and find out i made a couple bucks for my hobby. the only reason i would get serious is if there is some untapped talent that blew up in my face and kind of forced my hand. (and, the chances of that are worse than hitting the lottery....nothing comes that easy.)

but, a website to catalog/organize photos, while also displaying publicly, would be ideal. i cant imagine that costing much, if anything.

does any of that help??
