Men play baseball in the U.S. (until we're officially old ... then we switch to slow pitch softball "beer leagues"). Women play (fast pitch) softball.
Baseball is also a very popular sport in Japan and most of Central and South America (Cuba won the 2004 Olympics).
Until I saw your post, I had no idea there was a men's softball world championship. Always learning stuff in this forum ...
Our women are world (and Olympic) champions.
Edit: Oh yeah ... I hate the Yankees (to those over the pond ... I'm referring to the baseball team, not us in general :)) However, my beloved Detroit Tigers (http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/index.jsp?c_id=det) have been an embarrasment for years now.

Like the remnants of the British Empire play Rugby, the American Empire play Baseball? :D
Iv never understood the differnce between softball, and baseball though.
Other than the pitch, and the size of the ball, they both look the same.

Or Cricket. I sat next to an American at Lords last year and had to explain the rules. At one point when I was explaining Leg Before he exclaimed "and you limeys say Baseball is hard to understand, in this game you seem to make the rules up as you go along"

Cricket rules:
There are two teams - one that is in and one that is out. The team that is out tries to get the team that is in, out. Then the team that was in goes out and the team that was out goes in. The team that was in but is now out now tries to get the team that was out but is no in, out. The team that was out but is now in tries to stay in. When the team that was in but is now out, gets the team that was out but is now in, out, they go back in and the other team goes out. They then start again.
How can that be hard?
Final word - Come on Lancs! (OK 3 words)

:-) :-) that was about it!
"So that guy with the hat on is not allowed to stick his leg in front of the wicket?"
"He can but not if he gets hit by a ball that would have gone on to hit the wicket"
" So who decides it was going to hit the wicket?"
"The umpire"
"The guy in the white coat?"
"Yes him but he will only decide if theres an appeal"
"Appeal by who?"
"Normally the bowler who shouts "Howosthat" and jumps up in the air"
"You kidding me? This sounds a bit vague, isn't the bowler a bit biased?"
"Yes but thats a part of the game"
"So, the bowler guy chucks the ball at the batting guy and tries to hit him on the legs and if he does he shouts "Howosthat" and jumps up in the air"
"Thats close enough"
"So why wasnt that guy out?"
"He was padding it away"
"You mean he purposefully hit it with his legs?"
"Yes as the ball was outside of off stump"
"Im going for a doughnut"

They're fairly similar. In baseball, the bases are farther apart (90ft. vs. 60ft. ??) and the pitchers mound is farther from home. There are 9 players on the field - in some softball there are 10. There are other rules differences, but most don't change the basic concept of the game.
