I just got my 20D camera last night and love it. I have two questions that I can't seem to find in the manual (know it's there somewhere but its taking to long to find). I want to download my photos into my Macintosh. After I turn it on, what setting do I put it on to dowload them.

How do I take photos in the black and white mode?
Pretty basic questions but I am overwhelmed w/ all the wonderful features this camera has to offer.
Thank you for your help!

Welcome to the forum! You tend to get answers pretty promptly around here ;)

You don't need to change anything on the camera, just plug it in and you can download the photos. I never do that, I use a card reader instead, it's faster and doesn't use camera battery power.

For black and white, from memory, you go into parameters and change it to black and white. I'm not sure about that though, I (and most people) shoot in color and convert to black and white on a computer. You get much more control if you do it on a PC, compared with in camera.

Hope that helps :)

No you do have to put the camera in PTP mode. Go in MENU and find Communication, there you can set it to PTP. Next time you plug it in and turn it on, iPhoto will come on. It'll import RAW pictures and save them in a folder called original in the current roll folder.

This is the only way I have been able to get pictures out of my 20D, since my card reader is still on its way here.

btw, I have a 15" PB

About the black and white, for some reason my B & W pics look B&W in the preview but when i open them they are colour, this is in RAW mode in Photoshop im talking about

Welcome to the forum. :-) For B&W, see page 59 in your camera manual. As Tim said, from your menu, go to the parameter setting and choose black and white. Happy shooting!

Heh heh, spot the person who's never actually plugged his 20D into the computer.

Fatrat, photos in RAW record the "raw" sensor data. The B&W setting only effects JPGS, such as the JPG preview that the camera generates. That's why it's b&w in your camera and color in the RAW.

I did, once, on Day One. I used the Canon utility to record my name into the camera's EXIF data settings. After that, I have had no need for hooking up the camera directly.

Yeah I did that too, i've never tried to take photos off it with the cable though.

Likewise. With Canon's software under Windows, however, you don't need/want to be in PTP mode. You use PTP for direct printing, or to use Windows, not EVU, to transfer files. I guess it's different on a Mac.
