"Raw" is an adjective, not an acronym, so it doesn't get uppercased. When I see someone write RAW I want to tell them to stop shouting.
So there.

Hah, great thread... and to my surprise you do seem to be correct. That's something I am sometimes guilty of and I will not do it again now that I have that clear.
Here are my vents...
-Bicycles are meant for the street, NOT sidewalks, and it's illegal in most cities to be on the sidewalk (and unsafe)!
-The saying is "I couldn't care less" not "I could care less". :)
Hey, now I do feel a bit better.
:)

By the way, JPEG is an acronym, but I usually type it in lowercase. For the reason you mentioned above ... it seems like shouting to do otherwise.

But..but I kind of like the uppercase-ing. It works, I think.
It gives you a larger 'W' -- almost like teeth biting into a nice fresh slab of the raw world. At least that is what I think MY dslr is doing..

It is "anyway" not "anyways". It would be akin to saying "anyhows".
And thank you for pointing out the proper way of saying "I couldn't care less". Unless, of course, you could...

Getting raw mistaken for RAW is fair enough (I've done it myself), especially when most file endings can be capitalised. But lets bear in mind that not everyone on here is fluent in the English language so mistakes should be forgiven.

To be quite honest, some of the most affluent speakers/writers on this and other forums speak English as their second or third language. Most of the butchering I see is done by none other than US Americans. I realize that many areas like Holland require English and one other language to be learned (German/French?) as Dutch, their native language, is not spoken widely. I wish foreign languages were a stricter standard in American school systems as it would actually help them speak proper English.

If you read any documentation by Canon they print the word raw in caps so I think people just follow suit.

I've studied Spanish, Russian and Polish and never really understood English grammar until I started learning the new languages so I agree with you.

This would require adding a "u" to your alphabet.:lol:
But your right, it is usally native English speakers who most often butcher the language.
Im guilty of it every day.
:D I thought the same thing :D :D
Better yet, Canon print it all in caps in the camera. At least they have in my 30D.
So I am quite happy to use RAW all the time.

Canon has not acquired Adobe, nor the converse. Odd you should leap to that conclusion. But now you must do more than make a blind assumption of fact: You must make an actual choice and use actual judgment.
Canon, which manufactures cameras that take raw images, uses all caps. Adobe, which produces the most widely used raw processor on the planet, Camera Raw, doesn't use all caps. If you cite Canon documentation, others can cite Adobe documentation. Therefore, citing documentation doesn't settle the question. How, then, would you propose to settle the question?

For one thing, writing it in caps helps differentiate it from the non-picture format 'raw' and avoid confusion, sush as "That picture is raw. I didn't do any post processing to it." So is it a RAW format image or is it a JPEG with no PP?
Moppie

I would propose that there is no question.
It is either Raw, RAW or raw.
Who cares??
If were talking about meat or shooting with no clothes on then correct use of capitals might be of interest, but we are talking about a file type used by lots of different people, in lots of different ways, with lots of different languages and conventions.
Even Adobe give the option to captilize file names when processing images in Lightroom. Meaning they also support RAW.

That is a very good point!
The word "raw" has lot of differnet uses, and capitalizing the file type helps avoid confusion.

I knew full well that Canon had not purchased Adobe. You quoted me saying: "If you read any documentation by Canon they print the word raw in caps so I think people just follow suit."
Canon is the important word there. I wrote that Canon writes it in caps and you respond by showing how Adobe does it?
"Odd you should leap to that conclusion. But now you must do more than make a blind assumption of fact: You must make an actual choice and use actual judgment. "
I don't have the faintest idea what you are talking about. I made no "blind assumption"s about anyone or anything. I read from Canon sources such as their manuals, website and the cameras themselves and they print them all with RAW in caps. Since I haven't done an exhaustive study of everything Canon has ever put into print I can't with one hundred percent certainty state that they have never printed the word RAW in lower case letters but, of what I have seen they have not done so.
I really don't care how Adobe or anyone else spells RAW. I was pointing out why many people in the forums tend to spell RAW in caps.

I raise my voice during conversation to emphasis a word (via inflection). What is the proper way to give this same inflection in typed format?
When I cook Sunday dinner for special company I often give more attention to detail. When I cook weeknight supper for my kids I skip some of these same details. How does this differ from not spell checking for my "casual dinner" web postings?

Can anyone else explain to me what bee is in Peano's bonnet?
I don't know if I could have made myself clearer. I brought up how Canon does it and provided evidence then get jumped on because Adobe doesn't capitalize the word. Bringing up Adobe was apropos of nothing.
What, was Peano the person at Adobe that was responsible for how to print the word RAW?
Moppie

Best not to dwell on it :)
However, to make it really simple, we are talking about a file extension.
Thus it can be typed as Raw, RAW or raw if your using windows as it is not case sensative.
I don't believe OS-X cares either, but earlier versions of Mac OS and other unix systems are, or have been case sensative.
However, the point is, it is a file extension, so there is no correct or incorrect way to capitalise it.

It appears that Peano was just pointing out how Adobe spells Raw, but had quoted Gooble, making it seemed like he meant he was talking about Canon.
Gooble may have mistook this as being a direct reply to the quote, and hence the war began. This happens all the time on online forums.
No harm no foul guys :) Just a misunderstanding due to the nature of the typed word vs spoken. Kiss and make up :)

But RAW should be shouted. It is an affirmation of LIFE, ART and BEAUTY. It is a celebration of the marvels of modern technology and the vehicle upon which we will boldly venture where no man....
