It looks like Yahoo is making some deep cuts at Flickr. Thinking ahead any idea what other web site does a similar job as Flickr? I might want to move. Thanks.

Flickr won't shut down, it's owned by microsoft ...if microsoft shuts down, we'll have worse worries than where our photographs are being stored on the web...if microsoft shuts down, god help the rest of..every business out there.

Yahoo owns Flickr, as far as I know Microsoft never bought Yahoo.

If Flickr is making some changes to staff, it doesn't mean flickr is going down any time soon.

By no means is Flickr going anywhere. Just because a company lays off staff doesn't mean it's going down.

I hope. :p

I'm thinking the point is not if Flickr will shut down, it's more will Flickr slow down it's upgrades while this is going on and if so, will someone start to bring a better product to market.
Right now Google's offering is a joke, to my mind, compared to Flickr's. So the question is who else out there has something similar to Flickr?

Microsoft does not own Flickr, Yahoo does. And you could always try Photobucket, but imo, Flickr is far superior.

If Microsoft shuts down, open-source software will finally show its most glorious victory and receive all the attention that they should.

It will be the "D Day" in computer history.

Or like the collapse of the Berlin wall.

Or like the defeat of Hitler.

Or like every human on Earth were saved by god and all live in heaven.

Seriously, if you think Microsoft is doing us any good, its like saying "OMG if McDonalds KFC Burger King all disappear, we are all doomed!!!!"

Nevermind the tens of thousands of jobs lost. But you're right, those not making much, if any, money will rejoice.

Though I personally do not like Microsoft, I don't see them shutting down. Then again you never know, Open Sources is gaining tremendous amounts of steam right now.

there is no way Microsoft will ever go down (at least in the foreseeable future).. too many businesses depend on it. Businesses can't move to open-source because they need support for the products backed by contracts.

Open source is great, but for your average home computer user - they rely of Microsoft. Windows is a household name. Ask your average home computer user what Linux or even what Open Source means and you're likely to be met with blank stares.

A lot of regular computer users I know think "Open Source" means you're more likely to get viruses.

+1 for SmugMug

I'm actually thinking about switching from Flickr. I'm getting my pictures stolen on a regular basis. You can prevent this at Smugmug correct?

like the defeat of Hitler.

Could you please not equate a software company with the defeat of a war machine hellbent on the extermination of every single person on the planet without blond hair and blue eyes? There's a pretty big difference between computer code and genocide.

I mean, I suppose it's your right to be so ignorant of both the computer industry AND world history that you'd trivialize the entire Holocaust by comparing it to computer code, but you certainly don't make a good advocate of your cause when you do so.

I would think a open source advocate would know Godwins law...

Flickr isn't going anywhere, and as others have said, even if yahoo shuts down Flickr, something else will replace it.

you can do right click prevention, but that still doesn't stop anyone from just taking a screen shot of your pictures. smugmug clearly states this too.

And I'm moving all my stuff to smugmug. not because I don't like flickr, but they are just two different services. I want to keep my flickr account more as a photoblog. We'll see though, I'm finding I have way too many things I'm paying for yearly (domains, webhosting, photo hosting..)

Definally a +1 Smugmug, Ive had a website through them for over a year now. I use the pro account , which allows me to have a domain name linked to it. More professional. Even though its for a hobby.

The right click protection is a cool feature, most people dont think to do a print screen, thats down right desperate. Smugmug gives you control over everything! and people can buy the images right there off your website

How many people actually store all their images on Flickr in a high resolution for back-up?

Can you store RAW (.CR2) files on there?

I'm trying to think how to organise my photos. Can you upload FULL resolution images which no-one else can see?

rafiqsa

Never... I repeat Never ever upload high resolution images in Flickr...

Someone stole my kid photo and posted in their photostream as theirs...

I got yahoo to ban that user... guess he/she created another username and started stealing from some other...

Yes, those making vastly inferior products will rejoice indeed.

I use GIMP and use to use Sun's office software, but at no point do I truly believe that the world would be a better place if Photoshop or Microsoft Office were not around. I still use CS2 and Office at work. Anytime I'm working on a job I'm paid for, I'm using the software that's the most efficient, and that's never been the open-source apps, in my experience.

I thought so, too, but I thought it could just be me. I post photos on Blogger through Picasa and they are always blah on quality to me (compared to what I see on Flickr.) Thanks for confirming!

How good is GIMP?

Is it easy to learn?

Will it remove facial lines and blemishes?

Thanks for any help.

I'm asking this question at as many mentions of GIMP as I can find.

speaking of ignorance to historical fact, you two are aware that **** germany never aimed to exterminate all non-aryans right? i know it's a bit off topic to this thread, but i figured it was worth pointing out.

you were referencing someone who was jokingly mentioning how the collapse of microsoft may feel like a victorious liberation of sorts. he was just listing off hand a number of events in world history that exaggerate the sentiment. you guys need to chill out.

eh, it really depends. for screen resolution, quality really lies in the source. and picasa is far better laid out for sharing with friends in an 'organized' sense.

flickr is too much of a stream I've found for me to share easily. Sure, there are collections and sets, but going through them at a glance is harder. You don't have a page full of thumbnails (those tiny squares on the main 'set' page don't count) to glance at. And navigation is bleh. workable, but for the non-tech crowd, I haven't found it to work too well.

UGH, I just found out that you can only upload 200 pictures at Flickr for free. For more I have to pay per year. Why? I mean, 200 is VERY low. Photobucket and many others offer much more space. Ah well, I guess I'll have to try another place.

Open source are nice because they're free. I think a major part of PS animosity is that it's expensive - which attracts ditracters because some loathe expensive stuff, others because they thrive on being different for the sake of being different, and those that don't like commercial products, because somehow they are bad. I like Adobe's workflow, which as you say, is the major downfall on other companies.
