You have done an outstanding job capturing the best of that flower, but it is a kind of a dull flower.

I would not say that it was a dull flower. The flower simply does not have a lot of color contrast all on its own. Freddy was doing a study in the subtle tonal nature of the flower.

I would try to line up the same shot, but with some green or blue background (even if it is necessary to manufacture that background). When I am out for flowers, I carry along a large piece of dark velvet cloth and a support, just for this purpose.

i like it and as you must have used the kit lens - well that looks quite sharp so full size must be ok.
