Just for anyone that is curious,
I purchased one of these remote cords from ebay, and it works great. I have to say it is priceless for my night shots. It cost me 20 bucks, and shipping was pretty fast.
It works perfectly, and allows you to take great use of the bulb feature.
IMHO, it is worth it as opposed to the basically identical 70+ dollar canon remote.
Thanks for reading.

Bought one myself for £10.00 (+£2 p+p) from a guy in Germany - received it in about 3 or 4 days and it works fine, may not be as well built as the genuine Canon one, but I could afford to buy 3 of these for the same price :) .
I find it invaluable for tripod shots at low shutter speeds.

this looks mighty interesting, I might get one; I'm hesitating though, I'm kinda skeptical when it comes to stuff like this.

Basicaly, it is just a switch! (a two position switch, focus and shoot)
I don't know how Canon have the nerve to charge what they do for it, I've used mine for about 30 or 40 shots so far and had no problems.
Not used the genuine one so cannot comment on any differences etc.

Hadn't seen these before - just ordered one now. Can't complain for £12 ;)

My thoughts exactly. As I say I can't compare with the genuine item, but for the odd few shots you can't go wrong.

Has anyone ever seen an extension cord for the 20D plug? Or a remote switch with a longer cord?
Have Fun,

I bought two - one for my brother. Now I wish they could get RF remotes at the same kind of savings.

I had the Canon one for my 300D, and have the generic one for my 20D. Both worked perfectly, the Canon was a little more robust and well made, but both work perfectly.

My dad has the Canon Genuine switch.. it's the same thing. It only looks fancier.
with the Generic, you push down half way to autofocus, then all the way to activate the shutter.
In bulb, you can push it down, and then slide it up to hold the shuter open..
It's the same dang thing.. no difference with the Canon one.. just 70 bucks for it.
The choice is yours.

I agree. I have the Canon one for my Rebel G and found it to be a little more solid than the clone for my 20D I won from ebay. But that said $20 for a functional remote is a great deal.

My generic one from ebay should be arriving any day! But those sellers try to make a killing on the extension cord, which (for the Rebels at least) is simply a headphone jack extension cable and should be available at Radio Shack for a couple dollars.

I've got a generic one and it works quite well. It is really a simple thing that Canon should not charge an arm and a leg for. The fancy one should be the price of the simple one.

Have Fun,
Did you check B&H?
I was debating on getting the T3 cable extension but decided on wireless (Pocketwizard)

Mine arrived today (couple of days from Germany to UK) and it does the job perfectly. Build quality is more-than-satisfactory.
Funnily enough I was reading the big thread about Custom Fn. 4 today, and having a remote release is a great 'pro' for turning it on. That way you can focus beforehand, set everything up and use the release without affecting the focus.

There is a wired remote on Amazon.com for 19.95 also. You have to search for the RS-80N3. Also wireless remotes are available from http://canoncable.com

I just won one for my Rebel XT for $13.95 shipped. Hopefully it will get here before I leave for Disney. Should be nice for the fireworks displays.
