I have just got hold of a Sigma 70-300 APO II and so I went out into the garden to try it out. Seeing as the longest lens I owned until today was my 105mm macro I wanted to see what 300mm looked like so whacked it up to the longest setting and shot a couple of pics of the hedge at the bottom of the garden. Suddenly out of the corner of my eye I spotted a movement, I looked up and saw this little Robin on the fence about 25ft away so I aimed and shot. Went for another one... and he was gone.
This was literally the 3rd shot I took with this lens within about 1 minute of the first time I'd ever had it on my camera, ISO was set to 1600 and the lens was wide open at f5.6 as the light was bad (early evening and a bit overcast), handheld at 300mm. All things considered, I think this turned out pretty well.
Cropped and resized to 50% with some tweaking to reduce some of the noise and a bit of USM on the bird.
OK, so it's not the best bird shot ever but it's my first and under the circumstances I'm well chuffed with it!!! :D :D :D
