Well i have a rebel and i am looking for a decent walkaround lens for my camera. I am in need to get something better than my EF-S 18-55:o

None of your choices excite me, I'd just keep the kit lens and buy primes.

I'm a fan of the EF-50 f1.8 II. I find it to be a damn sight better than the EF-S 18-55 lens that comes with the rebel. And its also only £80 / $70. A nice lens.

Its fast, light, and performs well.

I've got the 18-55 and the 50. Think I'll just save up for some L glass now!

I think the first and last are the same thing ... I'm fairly certain there are not two versions of the Tamron lens. In any case, I voted for the it (the first one). It's an outstanding value and, in my opinion, clearly better than the other choices. It's provides a sharpness beyond what's expected in the price range.

I agree with pjd83 about the EF 50/1.8 ... everyone should have one of those.

The first and the last are definitely the same thing.

The 28-75 is what I use, the 50mm 1.8 complements, so rather than getting one or the other i'd get both. Zooms are a lot more versatile, and image quality between the two is pretty similar. I only use the 50mm for low light or very narrow DOF work.

Get the 24-70mm L lens. You will love it.

None of the above. I recommend the Sigma 24-135 f2.8-4.5 that I have.

Which lens for what purpose?

The 17-85 is the only one that has a wide angle.

The 28-135 is the only one that has a telephoto length.

The 28-75s have superior optics, but lack zoom range, image stabilization and full time manual focus override.

Depending on the situation, I could choose any one of those lenses, but would be least likely to choose a lens that does not have full time manual focus because sooner or later I would forget and stip the autofocus gears when I twisted the focus ring.

IMO F4.5 is too slow - I prefer lenses that are F2.8 or faster across their entire range. I won't buy slower than that actually, i'd rather save my money and wait until I could afford a decent lens. The Tamron 28-75 is a very good lens IMO.
