I am trying to find the benefit to the CM-E3-P over the standard CM-E3. They say the "P" model keeps the camera awake, by simulating the shutter button being pushed halfway. Is it really necessary, and does it effect the refocusing for multiple shots. I want to use my pocket wizards to activate the shutter control when doing rig shots of cars while sitting in the car. I'm not really sure if the extra money is worth having the "P" model.

Well, as long as you're willing to wake the camera up a minute or so before you want to take the next picture, you don't need the pretrigger but I'd get it anyhow.
