Since Canon does not recommend carrying the camera with the 100-400 straped around your neck, how do you carry your's? Most of the pictures I take are wild life I need the camera to be quickly available. I will also be doing some backpacking so I need to come up with a way to carry the camera with a backpack and with out a backpack.
Also is there a good book that would help me understand how to use the 20D better as well as photography in general? And yes I have read the manual many times.
Thanks.

Go to Barnes and Nobles and pick up a Lantern Manual on your camera. It is a must buy for any Camera. If you dont have a B&N around, go to www.amazon.com they have it.

When I have the 100-400 in use I ususally use a monopod,.. for backpacking it can even double as a walking stick.
Oh,. and I often let the camera hang from the strap with the 100-400mm.. in th grand scheme of thngs,. the 100-400mm is actually pretty light. ;)

You can also ask questions like you just did and find out a lot of info.around here. I suggest hiring a caddy for the camera and lens. I didn't say it would always be good info.. Welcome to the forum and what Ian said sounds like good sound advise.

yup- I'm like cyberDynesys on this (cept I'm better lookin')
The 20D is a tough piece of gear. I walk the horse shows with it hanging from my OpTech harness for hours at a time. RTFM and shoot yer brains out - you will be a better shooter (photographer) for the hard work. There is NO substitute for plunging in and making all kinds of mistakes !!
Course I've only been at this for 40+ years and I'm STILL learning.

The 100-400 lens goes on top of your tripod, and the camera is hanging off the back of the lens. The camera's strap is wound around the top of the tripod to back up any QR problem.

If you are handholding, you have 2 choices -
1/ Carry it by the lens foot
2/ Jam the lens foot into your belt (ie, between your trousers and your body), and then adjust the camera strap length so that when it just fits around your shoulder. This way, the strap and the lens foot both support a little of the weight and you can walk decent distances with it (I've done 3-4 hour on-foot big game tracking with this set-up without too many problems).
Either approach allows you to easily get the rig up for shooting.

I handhold the majority of the time, and originally thought it would be a problem to let lenses like the 100-400IS and 70-200 2.8 hang around the neck. As it turns out, the mounts are pretty sturdy. I've never had a problem with my 300D or 20D with a 70-200IS (other than a cramped neck). Hopefully that last problem will be solved when my OpTech strap arrives. I believe Lowepro also offers a harness system... but I have no experience with it.

Always handhold no matter what camera. Always strap around neck. Always handstrap. Carry/walk with camera supporting with hands.

Carl,
Where does Canon recommend that? I carried my 100-400L mounted on 300D around my neck, but I usually supported it by hand whenever I was moving.

Back in December when I got my 20D and 100-400 I contacted Canon support and that's what I was told. If you support it with your hand or carry it in your arm that was ok.
The other reason I need away to carry it is because I have had two neck operations and can not carry that much weight around my neck.
