View Full Version : Exif viewer and Vista

I recently HAD to get a new PC. Of course it came with Vista. I was very apprehensive about Vista to begin with due to all of the "extra stuff" I have hooked to my machine. As it turns out, VIsta is pretty cool - for the most part.
Last night I downloaded the "Opanda IExif 2.3" viewer. It will not work. A window pops up that reads = "ActiveX componet can't create object".
Is this due to the fact that I am running a 64 bit system? So far, I am NOT very happy withthe fact that I opted for the 64 bit instead of 32 bit. My PC purchase was done quickly and not by choice. My old machine was tired and it had finally had enough. I had looked at newer models, but not seriously. Then I bought one and had to wait a few days for it to be available - so when it did get here I was in a hurry -- I never studied up on the 64 bit VS. 32 bit, so when it asked me to make a choice - I opted for the newer set-up. I figured "What can it hurt?"

I cannot view ANY videos on sites like Youtube, or ESPN now.
Back to the question at hand (sorry, I ramble)...Why won't this viewer work? Does anyone here know, or have a similar problem?
Thank you in advance for any help you may provide.
Paul

Sorry I can't help, other than to suggest that you "downgrade" to a 32-bit version of Vista. Or better yet, to XP.

Many, many programs have trouble with 64-bit Vista, and simply won't run. What is even worse is that many more have trouble with 64-bit Vista and "sorta" run. That is, they appear to run, but will fail in some odd manner without warning, and usually without the ability to save what you've been doing.

That ticking sound you hear in the background is the built-in Vista time bomb.

I run 64 bit Vista. Opanda works fine, youtube works fine...in fact, I haven't had a single issue with it. Sounds like something isn't installed right.

I've been running 64 bit for over a year now...the 64 bit programs do their thing and the 32 bit ones do theirs...I have been very happy with both the computer and Vista 64.

Violator... stay clear of any Opanda products... seriously. I know you are talking about the free version... but...

I was duped into buying Opanda PowerExif 1.2 Professional as the trial seemed to work awesome. Then I found out about the registration process and the fact that their is nobody home at Opanda. Yep... out a $100 for a progie I can't even activate... beware... this company may have been there in the past... but the store is empty now (they will still take your $$ though through the automated process, just don't expect the program to work or them to even respond with the activation information).

Arghh... OPANDA... BEWARE :(

I downloaded Firefox, yesterday, and now I am not having any issues with the videos,...but when I right-click a photo there isn't an option for the EXIF viewer. So part of the problem has been solved.

Just a Question but did you follow the instructions in the Opanda FAQ ? -> FAQ (http://www.opanda.com/cgi-bin/anylog/list.cgi?cmd=view&user=web&group=3&page=1)

I had to change the setting "Run as Administrator" to get it to work.

EDIT: But I do think the option was there when I right clicked though.... Maybe you should re-install as an Administrator.

Did you install the EXIF addon for Firefox?

I had a similar issue with Youtube on Vista64. You need to ensure that you have the latest version of Flash player to get them to run. Can't help you with the EXIF viewer, as I don't use one

Just a note:

I believe there are TWO versions of Internet explorer that come with 64bit vista; a 64-bit one, and a 32 bit one... just for situations like flash, non-compatible websites, etc. (At least that's the way it's been with the Windows7 Beta and RC.)

I also don't regularly use an Exif viewer (not sure how opanda's works, is that inside the web-browser?) But as mentioned above, there are extensions for Firefox that should work, unless you prefer IE8.

The Exif viewer will work if I open that program and save the image to my pc, what I can not get to work (like before - on the old pc) is.....a web photo, on this message board, for example....I used to "right-click" on it and one of the options was the Exif viewer, not anymore.
"kujo", I was checking daily for an updated version of Adobe Flash....and now that problem is gone. (Thanx for your help tho).

Get FiXF, not quite as robust as Opanda, but gives you most of the useful fields in a nice window. Works perfectly on x64

I would second the suggestion of using the exif addon with firefox. works flawlessly with my vista 64 box.

go to Tools->Add-ons and search for Exif Viewer. Install that and restart FF. this will get your right click EXIF viewer option back. Works just fine on my 64-bit Vista.
