I'm looking for ideas on borders to use on an image. Theres crappy ones that come with some software packages but i'm looking for some really good ones.
Any examples would be greatly appreciated.

Define "good ones."
Most of us want to use a fairly plain border so that it does not distract the viewer from the main image.

If you go to the Photo Sharing sections of this forum, you will see some good examples.
Most of the photo editing programs will allow construction of just about every type of border. There are some programs that only do borders, and they have a whole selection of what I would call "artsy" borders that can be added in an instant. However, again, the plain borders will support your good image without being overwhelming. Adobe Photoshop CS has a whole bunch of them.
What I seek is a little more complicated. I would like to see an automated border action that will go in and figure out a key color of the image, perhaps display one or two choices, and then make all or part of the border action using that color. I haven't found that yet.

As an absolutely simplest example...
For an 8x10 print resize your photo to 7.5x9.5. Set the background color to black, increase canvas size to 7.6x9.6. Set background to white, increase canvas to 7.8x9.8. Set background to black, increase canvas to 8x10. Very simple.
Instead of white, using a color sampled from the photo can be effective. Also, putting the borders onto separate layers and then adding a drop shadow to the black layers can give you an instamatt that looks very close to the real thing.
As a last tip, spend plenty of time getting a border you really like, and making sure your photo is on its own layer. Then you can save all the border work, and swap out the photo layer as needed.
