Please help....

I just bought a Canon PowerShot S30. I took about 30 pictures and then I was looking through the menus. I was exploring the menus and accidentally selected format CF card.

It seems like this has deleted the disk?

My question is....can I somehow recover or restore these images? Is there any way via the camera or when I have the camera plugged into the PC?

There are many programs available.

If you reformatted your Compact Flash card, I don't think you can recover the images. This is one of the ways to permanently delete files. But if you find either a shareware or freeware utility such as Drive Rescue and you do recover them, would you let everyone know.

I did the same thing myself thinking I was deleting a single image (something I rarely do) when in fact I accidentally erased all of the files. I frantically searched the Internet for a free resource that could bring back my beloved pictures. I discovered such a resource in PC Inspector, available at:

http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/download.htm

The software worked great -- it successfully retrieved 70 of 73 files (including AVIs as well). The three files it couldn't retrieve (images I didn't really care about anyway) were corrupted because I took a few more pictures after I accidentally erased the files (my particular situation required it). The newest pictures (post erasing) must have corrupted the three images that happened to reside on the same storage area of the card. As you've probably no doubt read, if at all possible DON'T take any more pictures (and certainly don't format the card) until you can attempt to retrieve the images.

The software can supposedly retrieve pictures from a formatted flash card as well; however, this isn't something that I tested.

So, even if you've given up and started taking more pictures it may be worth a try. After all, the software is free.

One final note: I used a SanDisk compact flash card reader (rather than my camera) to retrieve the files.

I doubt that you will be able to recover the files using the camera. Since Windows (I assume that's what you're using) can't mount the camera as a drive but as an imaging device, and all of the data recovery software (I am also assuming again) can only recover from mounted disks, you won't be able to recover your files using the camera. Go buy a CF card reader; it's much faster anyway, and Windows can mount the CF card as a removable disk allowing you to attempt to recover your files.

Partial success for the newbie....

Background:
-64 MB eFilm CF Card
-Canon S30 Camera
-erased the CF card by selecting 'format' CF Card in the camera menu

What I've done so far:
-used Windows XP on an IBM machine
-used a SanDisk CF card reader w/USB connection
-downloaded PC Inspector File Recovery from:
http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/download.htm
-selected "Canon_DC on removable disk"
-performed "Find Lost Data".
-Saved the found JPG's onto my PC.
-The program seemed to hang on one file but worked fine when I just skipped over it when I was saving files onto my PC

Results:
-Pro - 12 full sized pictures
-Con - 40 thumbnails (the pictures blur when enlarged)
-Con - all the files state that they are 1.4 MB in size

I'm still hoping that I can recover full sized pictures of the remaining 30 pictures but maybe I'm out of luck?

Any thoughts or comments?

Billy: if you do not have a cf card reader, how did you attach the cf card to your computer?

The CF card reader is essential for this to work.

If you are just using your camera directly (i.e. plugging your camera into your PC) then the software won't recognize it as a drive.

When you use a CF card reader then the software sees it as a drive which enables the software to perform a search (i.e. the software can search the CF card for any recoverable files).

This conversations seems to have taken on two directions.

In answer to the original question, if you have formatted your card, you're unfortunately out of luck. It's just like formatting your hard disk - everything's gone.

However if you've just deleted your files, you can easily restore them. You will need a card reader so that you access your card as a drive. Any number of utilities will help you restore the deletions.

I stand corrected. This really does pull back images from a formatted card.

Amazing.
