These little guys are fairly common in the rain forests of Costa Rica. I have no idea what the adaptive benefit of the spread eyes is. Any entomologists out there?

Nice picture. It is one thing to describe an interview with a gorgon or a griffin, a creature who does not exist. It is another thing to discover that (a creature) does exist and then take pleasure in the fact that he looks as if he didn't.

Great quote, that's why I love the tropics. So much wierd stuff in the forest.

What a great picture-so clear! That is so cool. The head shae would help with aerodynamics in flight.

It would also increase range of vision to avoid predation. :)

Wow lol...I'm in agreement with anyne who said they never saw anything like that before...Actually kinda nifty though...It could be that those aren't really functional eyes but are there to make them look all big and bad so no one else will mess with them...Or maybe ^ lol

Woah..... that'd freak me out big time! Thanks for sharing. Never new a fly like that existed. You'd think it wouldn't be able to fly due to the weight of that thing on its head!
