I just ordered from B&H the 50mm f/1.4 USM and the 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM.
I'm thinking the 50mm will do well indoors and night shots of people, and the 28-135 will be my "walking around" lense during the day.
How is my thinking? What would you add? I shoot pics of people and scenic photos while on vacation or hiking.
By the way, I'm using a Rebel XT.

Your thinking is spot on with a film camera. Those lenses will do what you are expecting them to and be very good at it.
Don't add anything yet. Later on you'll decide on things like a wide angle (17-40) or telephoto (70-200) but for now you've got a great kit to start on.

OK, is that a digital rebel XT? doesn't look like there is a just a rebel XT.
I'd add an 18-55. You may find the 28-135 a little long. It'll still be a decent walkaround lens, but you'll often want to go wider. For the price the 18-55 is a good choice.

I echo Citizensmith's comments.
Just wanted to add that you might find if you go to say a car show (indoors where lighting isn't great) and there are alot of people, you might find the 50mm isn't wide enough to take pics from the barriers (so that people don't walk in front of you).
I used to find myself trying to step back to get the whole car in frame, but then with 198309485904 people around it was impossible to get a clear shot.
Which is why i got the 24mm 1.4 .

28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM.
If I could use only one lens forever, this would be my favorite.
I bought it as a backup to my standard wedding lens, and quickly I discovered that I liked it the best.

I couldn't agree more. I'd love for Canon to "L" this lens. I'd be first...maybe second in line.

I must be suffering from brain farts tonight. I ALSO forgot to mention that I do have the EF-S 18-55 "kit" lense that came with the dRebel XT.
Is this the same lense you are talking about?

I have the same setup, minus the "Nifty Fifty" you got there. My 28-135 is on the way. I do a lot of "walk around" shots so I think my 18-55 kit and my 28-135 IS USM should cover me.
Good choice is what I'm trying to say, cause I have the same.

The 28-135mm IS lens is a wonderful walk-around lens. I will love Canon more if she produces a 18-200mm L lens, the killer walk-around lens for DSLR.

Yup, sure is. You've got 3 good lenses there. You can get better but you'd have to spend a lot of money.

You've done good. My 28-135 is sharper than my 17-40L in some instances. And at least equal to my 50mm 1.8 when stopped down. My 18-55 was disappointing(poor focusing), but I've come to believe that a good copy is a decent lens.
