Why not they're pretty. I think a black boarder around the bottom one would complement it nicely. Why mention your age you think I'm gona be nicer too you? your old enough to drive out of the way of my critisisim.

Well, I'm new, too. This seems like a good place to go to learn.
I like the first one. It gives a nice mood.

I took this shot before i had discovered my dad's stash of tripods =)
This was my backyard a couple months ago. Ive been sitting around waiting for another clear sunset with some dern high clouds so i can get a brighter, sharper pic but nature mocks me.
I live in San Francisco... home of the best sunny skies in the world

I like both photo's Rich. The first is a nice silhouette but has a too much dark in the bottom section. Perhaps a closer crop into the details of the trees. The second one is a great composition but try cropping out brown puddle in the foreground. It takes away from a technically good photo. The horizon is straight and follows the rule of 3rds and the foreground and background are in good positional as well. Also, try this shot from a lower vantage point.
I hope some of the seasoned veterans and pros lend you some good advice and give you an idea of the lifestyle they have. My advice (from an photo enthusiast), get as much schooling in photography as you can afford. Every profession (photographer or otherwise) is high competitive today and you need to get every advantage you can. Good luck!

BTW the fact you are only 16 is no biggy :) I am also 16, and have also decided that i definitely want a career in photography, but on the other side of the pond here in the UK :) good luck, nice shots there

Thanks AJ Personally i liked the reflective brown puddle, and chose this one over several later in the shoot w/o it. It looked amazing on the print copy
Do you mind explaning to me the rule of thirds?? I know i cropped some sky because it was uninteresting up there

hey rich, welcome to the forum. and being 16 will only make me be meaner to you :p. i've never taken any formal photo classes nor have any real training myself, but from what i picked up around the internet (google has been my classroom, and this forum ;)), rule of 3rds basically divides your picture into a 3x3 grid and seeing how your photo arrangement lies in it. it basically helps with balancing the photo, though you dont necessarily have to follow it. i found that one of the (few) benefits of not having formal training is that im not bound by any of the photographic 'rules'. now that i've told you that i have absolutely no qualifications, let me give you some suggestions :D. the two shots are very pretty. good colors and contrasts. seems like you followed the basic rules of photography. but they seem to be missing something. they almost seem to be cropped from a much larger picture and im only getting some of the overall image. i hope that made some sense and helped. the only other thing i'd suggest is to keep taking pictures.

Rich: I started seriously into photography when I was 16/17 also. Drove my friends crazy going for drives and stopping every 50ft to shoot a photo. You're developing a good eye. Keep up the good work. Someone also mentioned the rule of the thirds and that's all fine and dandy, and yes you should learn the old-school ways of photography, but that doesn't mean you bend/break/snap/nuke the rules and just shoot what the heck you want.
I can see why you like the puddle, but it really detracts what is otherwise a very nice, colorful shot. My eye keeps going to that dirt and the puddle and it should not. The viewer should be looking at the beauty of the water (Monterey Bay?) the sky and the contrasting green grass and rocks.
Keep up the good work and keep shooting. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif
