My next door neighbor brought her daughter over with her today, and I quickly grabbed the camera with my new 50 1.8. Comments, please.

very nice, you captured great emotion there. the 50mm is a great lens, isn't it? I never thought I'd get such quality out of such a cheaply priced lens, but it's one of my favorites

Sure.
They were both shot at f4, 1/60, ISO400, 0 exposure comp. with the built in flash

You got some nice sharp shots there. I like that they don't look too posed as well. One thing you might try though.... Open up your aperture a bit and shoot without the flash. For me, one of the draws to that lens is being able to shoot with natural light.

JUst yestrday I was browsing thru some comparaison shots with the 50 mm 1.8 at different f stops...I remember thinking that the lens lost quite a lot of sharpness at 1.8

yeah, a lot of people note that.. I think it's generally something like 2-3 stops down (up?) from 1.8 when it's sharpest.

That's one of the reasons I bought the lens as well, but the shades were drawn, she was flopping around on the bed being a goofball, and I didn't want to lose the shot by stopping and setting up the camera and opening the blinds. It was in "P" mode, so I just flipped up the flash and shot.

This is one I took of my dog with natural light(2.8,1600,1/125). Upped the contrast a bit, but other than that no PS work.

Wow, if your dogs eyes had been in focus that would be an awesome shot! It really looks like he's trying to say something!

And that's the big trick with those 50's. One wrong move forward or backward when you have the ap all the way open and blur city! I had one of my best shots ever totally ruined because my nephew moved about an ½ inch forward when I snapped the pic, and blurred out his entire face. Oh, his shoulders where sharp as hell but his face and eyes looked underwater!
And of course it all looked PERFECT on that damn little 1.8in lcd screen so I thought I was walking out of there a champ! But when I got it on my computer later that night I realized I was only a chump!

Yea, she's saying "stop taking my picture"
Even the dogs are sick of me.
