http://www.canon.co.jp/Imaging/eos20d/eos20d_firmware-e.html
This firmware update (version 2.0.0) incorporates the following additions and improvements:
Support for the wireless file transmitter WFT-E1.
This function works when the WFT-E1 firmware is 2.0.1 or later.
This firmware update applies to cameras with firmware versions up to 1.1.0 installed. If your camera's firmware is already version 2.0.0, it is not necessary to perform this update.

Adding support for something very few peope would use doesn't really seem like a good reason to change the major version number. I guess i'll update the firmware in a couple of weeks when other people have tried it first, but if that's the only change I don't really see a need.

Yeah I have a big wedding shoot this weekend, so I'll wait until next week for this update. No room for surprises at the wrong time. Besides, who has $1000 for a friggin wireless unit for the 20D anyways?!?!? (I think that's what I saw it for... but I might have been drunk.)

Yes, it is not a necessary upgrade for the majority of users. And especially if you have a major shoot in the works. I am upgrading mine now.
And yes, the wireless add-on is freaking expensive.

Then don't do it. :)
I wonder if there are other minor updates in there that they didn't bother to list - that'd be the only reason to do it.

I always like to have the latest firmware/drivers for all my electronics.
Updated to 2.0 a while ago, and everything is fine.

It would be nice If the nwest firmware eliminated the error 99 problem, but hopefully that will come sooner than later.Probably is not an easy problem to fix.
Since where on the subject ,what is the best way to update your firmware?
tim

Put the firmware on the CF card using a card reader, then put it in the camera.

My firmware update went without a hitch...no stalls or any other problems. I DID remove the lens before updating (as we were instructed to do prior to adding the previous firmware update).

I was told last November that the next firmware upgrade would address the false low-battery alert on the BG-E2. Here's hoping!

What is the range of those wireless gizmo's? Whould be quite useful for some of the work I do if they have a decent range (i.e 50 meters), get them to go straight to my laptop harddisk.
Then again for the cost I could probalby get myself a pile of 4GB cards.

I've never had such a problem ... so it's apparently not inherent to the firmware (wouldn't it affect everyone, if it were?).

No. It's a wireless file transfer device ... sends your image files directly (via a wireless LAN) to a computer.

Err99's happen with all Canon's digital slr's at some point or another. There can be many reasons for it, like dirty contacts, lens problems, incompatible lenses (like sigma), etc.
I had 2 on my DRebel in 6 months, and I've had 1 on my 20D in about 6 months.

"I always like to have the latest firmware/drivers for all my electronics.

Unless the new upgrade does other things than the wireless thing, I don't need it. I don't know why I would need to do either of the last two firmware updates for my 20D. 1 of the fixes that was listed in the last one,(I don't remember what it was for) I never had an issue with. My 20D came with 1.0.5, and it's fine.
Now I know you might say, "If some thing is wrong with the camera, it's best to have the latest firmware when speaking to tech"
But I think so far the updates do little for 99% of the users.
I also don't understand people who use HACK software, look at the name. I see more problems in computers when people use multiple apps that do the same thing or Hack software.
To all of you that upgrade ASAP or use hacks, don't get upset with me, it's just my 2C.

It's very, very, very simple. If you don't want to update. Don't. I highly doubt that it matters to anyone here but yourself. If your camera is working fine and you don't need to capabilities of the new firmware, then by all means don't upgrade your camera.
For the rest of us. We will.
And actually the Drebel hack works quite well.

The only reason I'm considering upgrading mine is for the little bugs that Canon chose not to mention. With every software / firmware release there's often little annoyances that get quietly fixed (sometimes in lieu of admitting the problem ever existed!) The Battery Grip power indicator being that type of issue :)
But I can't afford to take the chance a few days before a big wedding shoot. As soon as it's done I'm all over the new firmware.

If the update fixes somthing like the Battery Grip problem, then there is a reason to upgrade and then I would do the upgrade also. Untill then, I'll wait.

That is referred to as a slipstream release.

Well, it doesn't fix the false low-battery some of us have been seeing with the grip. Other than that, the upgrade went smoothly.

Yeah, with my 94.1.02 makes my 20D faster than a 1DmkII, and increased resolution 2 fold with Fuji interpolation technology, now my pixels are 7008x4672 (32.7Megapixel).
The results are looking very good.

I downloaded the Mac version and loaded it onto the CF card but the camera never recognized the new firmware. Finally took it to the Canon Service Center, only a 10 min. drive.
Can't really say why my efforts didn't work. I formatted and could definitely see that the .fir file was on the CF card but it would never go to the window that indicated the camera was recognizing the new file. It kind of locked up there. Might have been a corrupt file?

I actually just installed the 2.0.0
My first ever firmware. No problems.
I've had a few lockups in my 3 months, and had to remove battery. So I thought it's about to fix it. I've always gone with if it's working fine, don't need to fix. Obviously it was causing some problems. I'll see if I have no lockups now.

The new firmware file had to be in the root directory of the card. Yours might have gotten stuck in the DCIM directory or elsewhere.

I just noticed that there is a new file on my CF card after a nite of shooting.
It's in the root directory and it's called "comstate.tof".
Anyone else notice this?

I miss the good ol' days when a MAJOR software revision (say, going from 1.x to 2.x) was that. Honestly, this was at best a rev to v1.2.0 (and more than likely it should have been v1.1.5 or thereabouts) -- it certainly didn't add enough to warrant v2.0...
Of course, I still upgraded

Hi,
Just to add my experience with the update, i've posted it in another thread here (http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=44526&page=2&pp=30).
