I just got a 20D with the lens kit. Is there suppose to be a seal on the box that shows if it's been opened before?
You know how some electronics comes with a seal on the box that you have to break in order to open the box. Does the 20D box have this seal?

Nope. Canon does not security-seal their boxes. Not even 1-series.

Wish they did lenses too, so you would know if you were getting recirculated ones.

I didn't see any security-seal, so I thought I got a refurbished or open box one.
Just making sure. Thanks.

Smell it............if you smell somebody's finger prints on it, then its probably not new.

I am surprised that Canon has not addressed this... I wish they would put seals on the products so we know we aren't getting equipment that someone has already returned and may be a bad copy or something of the sort. When I got my 20D the only sign that it hadn't been touched was the perfect packing around the kit lens, camera, and sealed accessories. Wouldn't it just make sense for the store to open the sealed items and use one for a demo... or does Canon do this at the request of big chains so customers can't tell what has been returned or demo'd?

Most likely they are afraid that customs would want to open the package and buyers would later reject it for that reason.
Who knows whether US homeland security will allow shipments of dubious Asian companies to go unchecked. Might contain small atomic bombs instead of IS modules

Andy, that seems valid with all of our security issues... but compact digital cameras come sealed, and I am told that Nikon SLR cameras are as well. If that is the case, then I don't get it....

All my Canons came with a seal. The older 300D, the Ixus and the 350D. Plus, them alla had the papers sealed in plastic inside the box, not a plain plastic envelope sealed with tape, but a thermally sealed one. None of the lenses had a seal, however.

I notice you are from Italy.... Is the non-sealed boxes just a US thing?

I bought two cybershots and they all came sealed. Brought 3 Powershots and all came sealed. My Sony PSP came sealed. Laptops, PDAs, etc. came in sealed boxes. Just thought it was odd that my 20D didn't. Everything inside the box was sealed and packaged nicely though.

Over the preceding years, I've bought two 10Ds, a 20D, a 1D MkII, two G2s, a G5, and an S70. None of them were 'sealed.' The only things I've ever bought from Canon that were sealed were the 300 f/2.8L and 500 f/4.0L which come in cardboard boxes that are taped shut at the factory.
I would expect that the decision not to seal is based on the stigma that attaches itself to 'open box' items. People usually want to pay less for something that gives the appearance of having been rejected by someone else. A broken seal would have that effect on most people.

Aaron, honestly I have no idea. Usually I do not buy anything that is not factory sealed (there is also the psychological pleasure to "open" it). But here almost everything in consumer electronics is sold sealed. Actually, on bot the 300 and the 350 the seal was a sticker about a ptomotion (don't know why we do not have cash rebates here) with the codes for gettin a free 256MB CF. The Ixus just had a big circular seal with the Canon logo on it.
Nothing on the lenses, perhaps.

Well it may be something local.
The seal I got on my lense boxes is a plain white circular sticker, cant say it is from canon or from retailer but I dont see any reason why a retailor would do that.
As about camera itself, box was not sealed but all inside contents were sealed. The salesman takes out all stuff & confirms they are fresh before you pay the bill.
All the filters I purchased were in sealed box too.
I think this (seal/no seal) is region specific & nothing much to worry about.

yeaht he PnS camera's are sealed but my 20D wasn't. I am from OZ but bought mine from a comapny that got it from Malaysia...not sealed, the firmware was even uptodate and the backup battery was in there and the date and time was correct....
I wish they would put like a seal on the camera or something so show that noone else has used it before (like one on the battery lid or something.)....

Canon doesn't seal their boxes. Some manufactuers are putting their own seals on.
I purchased a canon SD200 for my gf, and there was no seal on it. I left the store opened the box and there was everythin but the camera inside. I went through a lot of hassle to tell them that I wanted a box WITH a camera in it. In the end, i was able to get a box with the camera inside.
I too am surpised canon does not factory seal their boxes. I think they would like to but there is something in the manufacturing process that doesn't allow them to.
