Hi:

I am a little bit stumped trying to disassemble the 580EX (mk 1). It is not working at all and I thought I would open and see if there are any broken traces wires etc. before I send it off to Canon for real repair. I was able to take the hot shoe foot assembly by removing 4 screws. Then I rotated the flash head and took off two screws from one side and made the two halves of the flash body (not head) separate a bit. But the issue is that something is catching on the side of the body opposite the battery door. There seems to be something in the high voltage input/"bracket fitting" area that is preventing one half from separating from the other. I wiggled it and used some minimal force, but it did not help. Does anyone have any ideas on how to take the two halves apart?

Thanks!

Thanks, but I am not sure if you are referring to the flash head or the flash body. I have attached a picture of 580EX. I would prefer not to open up the flash head as the comment on the picture says. Also, since the head rotates, I am not sure I need to open it up to open the flash in the first place. I have made a note as to where on the body the flash halves are sticking. I will open up the flash head if that is the way to get to the flash body, but I wasn't sure if I needed to.

Hi rsrinivas, did you ever get the casing on the 580ex open? I'm at the exact same point and haven't been able to open it. Let me know if you figured it out!
