View Full Version : Goodbye my dear Tango...

I said goodbye to my 12 years old Lab on Saturday morning. He had a great life but years had taken their toll on him and he had diabetes since being 6 years old. To the contrary to what people think when you tell them you need to inject insulin twice a day in your dog, it wasn't a hassle and became routine.

I loved this dog so much that right now I'm really crushed. He was such a great companion and had one one the best personality of any dogs we ever had. It's tough on the wife and kids also.

He was loved till the end and surrounded in his last moments by people that loved him immensely.

So Tango, rest in peace. You earned it my faithful companion and you will be truly missed...

"Just a Dog"

From time to time, people tell me, "lighten up, it's just a dog,"
or, "that's a lot of money for just a dog." They don't understand
the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved
for "just a dog." Some of my proudest moments have come about
with "just a dog." Many hours have passed and my only company
was "just a dog," but I did not once feel slighted. Some of my
saddest moments have been brought about by "just a dog," and in
those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a dog" gave me
comfort and reason to overcome the day.

If you, too, think it's "just a dog," then you will probably
understand phrases like "just a friend," "just a sunrise," or "just a
promise." "Just a dog" brings into my life the very essence of
friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy. "Just a dog" brings out
the compassion and patience that make me a better person. Because
of "just a dog" I will rise early, take long walks and look
longingly to the future. So for me and folks like me, it's not "just
a dog" but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future,
the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment. "Just
a dog" brings out what's good in me and diverts my thoughts away
from myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a
dog" but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from
being "just a man." So the next time you hear the phrase "just a
dog." just smile, because they "just don't understand."

Oh, I'm so sorry. We, too, have an 11-year-old labrador. It's so sad to see them grow older. Whoever once said "A dog's life is too short; it's their only fault, really" was right on the money. All the best.

I am sorry for you. I went through this with my dog Shayna this past November and I know the feelings of looking for your friend and not having them be there. You loved her very much.

I carry your loss to heart as we all do. Are pets become family in the truest sense of the word. For many of us they are the children that we never had. Even in our darkest hours, we remember our pets in the best light!

Very sorry to read of Tango's passing...

They say a society is judged by how they treat their animals. I'd say you raised us all up a notch or two.

So sorry, I know how hard it is....

Here is that saying:

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way in which its animals are treated. I hold that the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man."Ghandi

Probably one of the nicest thing someone that doesn't know me personally ever told me. Thank you very much!

Thank you everyone for your kind support and words. I know they say the internet is impersonal but in moments like these, I can tell you that all your posts make a difference.

I can also tell you that a new adventure will start as one has ended. Next weekend, I am starting a new family member :). It will be a lot of work but that pup is showing great potential and will be given all he needs to reach it. Once again, I really wanted to thank all of you who took a minute of your time to post here.. :)

that is one lucky pup! if he has half the love & affection your tango received he will have a wonderful life. it is hard to let a friend go to sleep - sometimes the right thing is the one that costs you the most

That's so true. Tango was ready to go. He was letting me know with all kinds of little things. There was no more pleasure in his life. Just getting into the car or looking at climbing only 3 stairs was now something that looked so tiresome for him. He had received all the medical help needed to make this as pain free as possible but that only lasted so long. At one point it's not enough and you have to let go.

Keeping him around just for the sake of it would have been selfish of me and unjust for him.

The pup will get all the love he needs believe me! (with exercise and discipline or course. I hate dog owners that are irresponsible and think that spoiling a dog with affection is all there is to being a dog owner. Proper exercise, structure and discipline are not just bonuses but essential to a dog) sorry end or rant!

You were all so lucky to have had a friend and companion like Tango.I have lost many dogs in my lifetime, and it never gets easier, but to not have a dog in my life would be unbearable.
