I'd say Paris for both.

I would put Hong Kong, London, Paris and New York first equal for the most famous.
Most photographed would be a hard one, but New York and London would be right up there.

I'd go for London, New York, and Paris as about equal for both questions. Maybe London with a slight edge.
Modesto probably isn't too far behind though.

Forgot to add that Paris is the number one city for tourism (destination) in the world, and it has been for many years. The source is world tourism board or something like that.

Quick question: Which city do you think is the most famous in the world?
Hard to say... But I would say, not necessarily in this order, NYC, Paris, Rome, Florence, Venice and London.
Quick Question 2: What is the most photographed city in the world?
:D
This can be tricky... when I worked in EK back in the late 80s the statistics on camera film sales were demonstrating - believe it or not - that Venice was the highest film selling in Europe (up to distibutors, we had no clue about who was the final user, I am referring to consumer type film, i.e. Kodachrome 25 was not included). Second was Rome and third was Paris. I do not know about the US or the rest of the world.
Things may have changed since then, but I believe that the art cities here in Italy are at least in the top ten anyway.

Yes, it is right up there with Turlock and Lodi.

How come no-one has mention Elasti-city or Electri-city! (sorry for the terrible pun)
Would Cairo be up there in terms of photographed?

London's been about a lot longer than New York, but whether that makes it more famous I really couldn't say.
I would guess at New York being the most photographed, followed by London

I'll throw a vote for Greely Colorado, but I heard last night that London had the best resaurant in the world, then it was L.A. or Paris, then London again and then Sydney, I think.

They're not kidding about London being expensive - I bought a round of drinks for my mates and almost passed out at the cost! £9 ($17) for a glass of wine!!

I take cigarettes with me when I go to London. How much does a pack of cigs cost now, 4 pounds sterling...that's $6.5.

I'll stick with my Modesto suggestion, although admittedly the Lodi one is pretty damn close too. Rio Vista does have a very nice bakery and the Mexican food is really cheap. Does that count for anything?

I would say Rome, Athens and Jerusalem, people have know about those cities for thousands of years. If we are talking about fame.
If we are talking about the most known modern City? I'd say New York hands down. I know very little about London and Paris (except some of the monuments), both are places I have never been too but I know lots about New York, another place I have never been.
Now if we are talking Coolest City? Hands down its Edmonton Alberta :);)

On a serious note I am amazed that no one has said Makkah & Madinah (Mecca & Madena) Given the extent of Islam I would imagine that these are increadably well known cities.
This is a really interesting thread, it really highlights western centricity.

Well in that case you could put down Delhi, and Bejing.
The Capital cities for 40% of the worlds population should be pretty well known. :D
However, cties like London or New York are extremely well known outside of western culture, simply because of thier popularity in the media, and in the case of Londan it's place in history as part of impact of the British empire on the rest of the world.

Moppie, based on the 2001 The New York Times Almanac...the world population was 6,06 billion and China's population was 1.28 billion. It works out to be around 21% of the world population.

You forgot to add Delhi. India passed the 1 billion mark. So Moppie was close (37.6%).

For most photographed city, I'd suggest perhaps the main shrine one in Japan. They got all the numbers - income numbers, camera numbers and tourist numbers. Some carry 2 cameras each, and its all ages too...

Also Moppie would be even closer if the real population of these two countries was considered. China had it offical 1.3 billionth person not long ago, but there is near to another million floating about - lots of ileagals due to the 'one child policy'.

Most popular in the Western World would be New York, Paris, London.
And maybe by population size, Vatican City could be the most photographed?
Definately somewhere in Europe.
How about Gisborne? Anyone in the world know that? :p
Population only a bit over minimum city size of 25,000.
Sure it's the biggest in the world.

This is just a guess but with both Haj & Umra, Makkah (Mecca) must be pretty high on the most visited places in the world list. As for the US, I read rercently that Orlando was the most visied spot, I guess that is thanks to Walt and Co.

Actually I think it could have been Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakit anatahu, but that is actually a hill not a city! BTW that is a real place name, it means "the place where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, who slid, climbed and swallowed mountains, known as 'landeater,' played his flute to his loved one." So there.
On the back of many labels, esspecially cosmetics you will see London - Paris - New York, in fact Golds Gyms bumper stickers had that and the city that the local gym was in.
