I have taken some lovely shots of my god daughter and would like to know how i can best improve on them.

You should always consider the background when taking pictures. In the first shot, there is a bowl or something on the ground which kind of looks like it's stuck to your god daughter's ear. Also, I think the angle is too high. Children normally look better when photographed at their own height.
The second photo in my opinion is too close up. Go back if you can and take one hundred or more shots. Look through them very carefully. You will know which ones are good.

I had the same issue when I was taking shots of my students and getting down to their level is one of the best things you can do to really enhance pictures of children...
She is adorable, keep snapping, they are all treasures...

Greetings,
Looking dwon on her give a different perspective and if that is what you wish to convey the message. That is subjective. On the technical side, your photo is over exposed and the on camera flash gave a harsh light on her face. Otherwise is quite a good candid shot.
