17-35/2.8L...Your thoughts

I was looking to buy the 17-40L when i recieved a PM off another board. Guy has a used 17-35/2.8L which he describes as "Mint" condition and he is asking the same $$ as the 17-40L would cost me.

What are your thoughts? He is emailing me pics of it.
I am a CPS member. What will Canon charge to check it over??

The luminous landscapes (see thread comparing the 17-40 and the 16-35 below), had them on a dead heat.

The 17-35 is the older model and not as good as the 16, so my advise would be go with the 17-40 unless the extra stop means a lot to you.
