About to buy the Canon Digital Rebel XT, what do you think of the CANON EF 75-300MM/4-5.6 USM II/III AF lens?

i realize there is be a range gap from 55 - 75 area. i am looking for a 300mm lens though, and this one is priced great at $275 CAD

For the price it's not bad. It's not the finest piece of glass on the market, but if you need 300 mm and don't want to pay an arm and a leg, or even a couple of fingers, it's not a bad deal. The 55-75 gap isn't too significant; you won't need to crop too much from a 55 to compensate. But trying to compensate for using a 200 mm lens on a shot that needs at least a 300 mm lens is going to be a headache. See what the general starter lens consensus is here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56747).

I could be wrong, but it seems to me that it might be better to spend less on wide to short tele lens, then on longer ones. I've always been disappointed in cheap long lenses.

If you need a long lens, there's no substitute. If you need a wide lens, you can often use PhotoStitch or similar programs to paste up a panorama. But trying to over-enlarge a small crop from a short lens is a recipe for disappointment even more than using a cheap long lens. And the 75-300 isn't a cheap long zoom. It's a moderately-priced fairly good zoom, although not L by any means. Used carefully, it will give you good shots.

Read this: http://www.photo.net/equipment/canon/300_compare/

You can pull good quality if you are willing to work within its limitations.

The 75-300 USM uses the louder and slower micro motor drive. I'd consider the EF 100-300 f/4.5-5.6 USM instead. It has rear focus with true USM ring drive (faster, silent). It has better glass, too. Doesn't help your range gap, though.
