Right now I have no legit macro lens. I've been using my nifty and some ten dollar tubes. I'd like to buy a real macro lens to see if I really like shooting macro. I found someone who is willing to trade my 28-135 for a 50mm 2.5, a uv filter, polarizer, and a bag, straight up. He also has a canon life-size converter. I'm trying to see if he will do the lens and converter for my lens straight up. But is the first deal, without the converter worth it?

And one more question. I know I will lose infinity focus with the converter but will I still have autofocus? And will the aperture still stay at 2.8? I've heard conflicting stories.

Frankly f2.8 and autofocus won't be that useful for macro work anyway.

I would still have the ability to see. Right now I'm using the nifty stopped down and it's hard to see what I'm focusing on. I just want to know if I would be getting jipped or not, not if it's the best macro lens.

I'd expect the aperture to drop some (maybe to f4.0), but you will get wide open metering unlike the budget tubes.

Not a good trade...at least for you...think about it...when you get done, you have two 50mm lenses and that is it. The 28-135 works pretty well with extension tubes. Keep your lens and get a set of decent tubes...you can get a set of Kenko tubes that will AF and meter for around 100 bucks on ebay.
