Lance Armstrong and his buddies blew through my neck of the woods today on thier way to Rome, GA for day 2 of the Tour De Georgia. Boy these guys are fast, the whole shebang was over in 30 seconds! I thought 1/500 sec would be fast enough, but most were too blurry. Really need to work on my panning! I did manage to get a few worth looking at. Maybe the time trials in Rome tomorrow will last a little longer...

It would have been nice had you been able to get a couple that were a little tighter.... but you get what the circumstances will give you.... beautiful colors though. It would an intersting sport to do some panning with too....

Thanks, I did have a few that were tighter as they rounded the corner, but my panning really needs more practice. I was hoping they would have been spread apart by this point(about 20 miles into it) so I had more time to practice.

Try using a monopod to smooth our your panning. For the time trial, get down low with a nice head on angle and maybe sit on the outside of a corner for a shot. Ideally, when panning, shoot at 1/200to get some background motion blur.
Here's a shot from the Tour of Britain in similar circumstances:
