View Full Version : Do you have "Go To" spots for Sunsets/Sunrises?

(Keep in mind I'm a rank amateur with a day job ;) )

Do you have one or several spots picked out that you can get to quickly if you see atmospheric conditions are leading to a great sunset or sunrise? It seems like living in the burbs when I see a nice sunset I'm nowhere near a scenic location, and by the same token if I'm out specifically looking for a sunset, the location may be nice but the sunset is below average.

It would seem like a good idea to scout out some great locations within 15 minutes of the house and work to be able to get to, know the prime angles and shoot when the skies are doing their thing. Do any of you do a similar thing?

Absolutely. When I see the right conditions in midday for great sunsets, I either head to one of 3 spots if I'm in town, or if I have quick transportation, I head out toward the north or west side of the island. I try to think of good places to take pictures when I am at school/work, that way, when the time is right, I know exactly where I want to be. This implies that I've done some extensive scouting before.

Sunsets and sunrises are perhaps a bit cliché (shouldn't say that considering the last image on my blog :)). I bet you could find dozens of good photo motives around your house no matter where you live. I have several beautiful sunrise and sunset photos of empty beaches, but apart from the beautiful scenery they're pretty uninteresting so I never use them.

Now I tend to make a 180 turn during sunset/sunrise which points you towards a lot of interesting subjects that are getting hit by that fantastic light.

I too am in the spotting mode most of the time. Often I write down locations, and the conditions that would make them look great.
