I was shooting children in snow forest
and D30 set wrong exposure always.
Way too underexposed.
So I had to use exposure compensation
either +1 or +1/2.
Why is it so?
Same happend while using direct flash
in the room - 550EX (and it is OK with
the reflected flash).
Help please if you know the answer!

Gee I thought this was something everyone with an SLR learned quickly.

The camera cant see color. It just knows how much light falls on the sensors. If you have something WHITE or something BLACK the camera thinks it all grey and gets it wrong.

YOU have to do the compensation to get the image you want.
