I have never been up in one yet but I thought this was a pretty cool snapshot with them all getting ready to take off.

What the bummer is: I shot a few shots when the balloons came to Salem in the '80's and they had a contest and one of my shots won the front page and the grand prize... you guessed it, a balloon ride. I never did take it and don't know where the certificate is for it. :(

The colors are GORGEOUS Ken. I've often wondered how good a platform a balloon would be for aerial photography? I'll bet that would be fun. :D

4:20 is the time of day that was designated by a group of hippies back in the '70s as the time they'd get together and smoke pot. It's something that's been picked back up by some people to do, and make April 20th (4/20) out to be "the day" to smoke up, or get high (thus my reference to your title).

Just something that caught my memory since a few friends had made comments about it today

Considering that today's date is 420, I actually thought there would be some kind of reference to a little 'high' action! haha And "420" has been rumored to be a California Penal Code or a transmission code for police agencies, but that's a known rumor/myth. No one knows the origin of "420", but does it matter?

Nice picture, brings back memories. Me, my hubby and my dad took a hot air balloon ride late summer of -04, it was amazing. I really truely wish I had had the 20D back then to take even better shots, it was a once in a life time opportunity for sure.
That's quite a few balloons to take off, where was it taken?

Yeah it was a trip for sure, the only thing I'm upset over is that I thought we'd go over Stockholm like you see in all the brochures but we didn't, we went out over the suburbs and the fields. =o( But still it was an amazing experience, one I will probably never do again. I might try to catch them taking off without being on a balloon myself some day but flying...no not unless the guarantee me flying over town.

Yeah there's a lot of pictures I wish I had had the 20D for, oh well.

That looks like an amazing place to go take photos even without the balloons.

If anyone is interested, I crew for a hot air balloon team out of Augusta, GA. If anyone wants to tag along some time, and get some great shots at balloon events (that's what they're called when they're all massed together). There will be an event memorial day weekend in Anderson, SC. That is the largest balloon event in the Southeast with almost 100 balloons. There will be one in Syracuse, NY June 10-12 and one in York, PA from June 17-19. I will be at those three. There are MANY MANY more. You can get up close and personal at most of these events (Albequerque and New Jersey do not let spectators up close). So they are awesome photo opportunities. The insides of the balloon are what interests me the most, as you don't see those pics that often. Believe it or not, pilots always need crew, and it's the best way to get a free ride. That is how my wife and I got hooked up with ballooning. We met a pilot and he needed crew, now it's one of the hobbies my wife and I share. It's a great weekend activity, and the photo opportunities are endless.
