Sunset pixel washout

I am trying to shoot sunsets with my Powershot Pro 1. Prior to the sun dropping below the horizon any image which contains the sun, or a bright segment peeking from behind a cloud, causes a vertical washout of all pixels above and below the sun in the image. Any ideas on how to correct for this? I am not using any filters. Thanks.

Can you show us the picture? It could be a few things, a pic will help clear it up. Just resize the pic down to about 800 pixels wide, hit post reply, hit manage attachments, attach the pic, hit ok a few times - easy :)

Have deleted all offending shots in frustration, will shoot one on the next sunset. True to Murphy it is overcast this evening. Thanks for the reply, am serious about figuring this out.
