I have just over 9000 on my 300D. How many should I expect before I should expect problems? Should I have preventative mainentance done at certain intervals to keep it in good shape?

I was going to say do a search, but I tried myself and couldn't find the answer. From memory it will vary, on average, from 25K to 50K, and there's nothing I know of you can do to extend its life. When it breaks it can be replaced.

I really doubt it, but you'd have to ask to be sure.

Please don't let any of this stop you from using your camera!

I've got almost 4000 shots on mine and don't plan on stopping until it breaks. If it breaks I'll either repair or replace it depending on the circumstances at the time of failure. I'm very pleased with my 300D. Now I'm just waiting for some L glass.

Careful, that stuff's addictive.

You should be able to expect over 30,000 shutter actuations..
They do fail earlier than that at times,. but if it's under warranty still Canon will repair no charge.

Sounds like it will last me until I can upgrade. It is 14mos old now. How long is the warranty? Will warranty cover the black grip material that is coming off?

So don't take less pictures, take more and FASTER! That way, when it breaks it will hopefully still be under warranty! If not, you will have enough experience to decide on upgrading or buying the same replacement camera. :)

If it's still in the time of coverage, why shouldn't they? Noone's yet conclusively shown that the Double-Digit D's (D30, D60, 10D, DR, 20D, DRFX) have an actual shutter counter, and I'm not absolutely convinced that the 1D series counter that's been reported on is a count of shutter firings vs. frames taken. As I don't have a 1D series, I can't run a test, but on the DDDs I've checked the equivalent field values are the folder/frame number references.
