Im looking at which filters to get for a 70-200 2.8 IS Canon lens..77mm right?
I plan on keeping the lens hood on all the time...and was just wondering:
With the lens hood on...how easy is it to remove / place the lens cap?
Im thinking Im might just skip the filter if it is easy to put the lens cap on / off while the lens hood is on the lens

77mm is right. I keep a UV filter for protection on all my lenses. Even though the hood will offer protection there is always the chance that your lens will take a tumble when the hood is reversed for storage (first hand experience there). Putting a filter on the lens doesn't impede or hinder putting the hood or lens caps on.

Just what I was looking for!
Thanx.
I think I will skip the UV filter for now...b/c Im the sorta guy that will keep the lens cap on all the time if Im not using it.
and I guess I will take the 0.00001% risk of something hitting the lens while I am actually shooting.

I would have liked to show you a two year old filter that I replaced a week ago on my 70-200. There are little micro scratches all over it. EVERY ONE of those scratches would have been on my front element without the UV filter. There's dust and grit in the air when you shoot in a city and you are just not aware of it, and don't get within a klick of a beach!
As for the 0.000001% chance of something (big, I suppose) hitting the lens while you are using it, that is the same argument for not wearing a seatbelt. Now if you could only predict WHEN that 0.000001% would happen ...
