I currently have a 4gb Hitachi Microdrive CF II, and I’m looking to pickup another card. I’m looking for something around 8GB. I do a lot of sports photography, specifically Paintball.

I need something alittle quicker than the microdrive but not like the Extreme IV’s. I’m looking for speed meets price, and something that is just quicker in general than the Microdrive.

Any ideas? :)

Wow, I thought this was a thread I dragged up from the hinterlands.

Who uses microdrives any more? Well, dumb question cause you do.

I think the Ultra III Sandisk cards are the sweetspot.

Lol.

Yes, the microdrive is old school :)

Find your camera here (http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=6007) and see how much performance you'll get from the different options. I think you'll need to go to his Archives and interpolate between the 350D and 30D performance levels though; he doesn't seem to have the 400D listed anywhere. But I think you'll find almost any CF card currently available from the Ultra II on up will outperform your microdrive (as well as being more robust).

I was thinking of the Extreme 3 but debating between a 8gb and 2 4gb.

I really shoot alot and quickly at the beginning of each start of a game.

I would recommend a cheap, pretty fast and reliable card -- the Transcend 16 gig card. ---They were just $47 last week-- now $51 --
I have eight or so-- I used them heavy the past year for non-wedding work and have had no problems. They are not as fast as the SanDisk Extreme III but half the price.

One thing to realize is that the larger the card, the slower it will perform, even with the same performance rating. For that reason, I stick with 4 GB cards, with 8 GB for when I know I'll be shooting a lot but not in full-out burst mode.

Thats kind of the price i want to pay.

And 16gb would def help me out.

As for speed, compare it to my microdrive, i'm sure it would be a big jump.

Though, what are the speed differences between that transcend, Extreme II, and a extreme III?

Also, eyeing up this, get 2 of them.

I think the SanDisk Extreme III in 8 GB might be what you are looking for. It's fast enough and large enough to fit most needs.

Maybe two of those, or one now and another later.

Just my preference.

Good luck.

Realistically, in your 400D, nothing at all. The differences in speed will only be evident when/if you use a card reader to import images to your computer. The camera is a speed bottleneck, and realistically you are not going to see any difference in buffer fill times, buffer empty times etc. between the Ultra II and Ext III. Only reason to buy better cards is if you plan to upgrade in the future and want to outlay a little extra now.

DO NOT BUY CF CARDS ON EBAY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES THEY ARE HIGHLY LIKELY TO BE FAKE.

As stated above - do not buy any memory cards from eBay - 99% of them are fake.
Buy from a reputable vendor

A lot of good things can come out of eBay... legitimate memory cards are usually not one of them...

I haven't followed the advice, but someone mentioned that if you get a card that is faster than what will benefit your camera, it will transfer faster to your computer.

Quick question. How often should you replace a CF card? Do they lose detail with age? Thanks

I have a pair of the 16gb Kingstons. Never had a problem with them. Great cards for the price.

Not that I've ever noticed or heard of. I have 147,500 photographs on my back-up hard drive from 2007 thru today all on the same 10 CF cards... Mostly my 2 4gb San Disks. I haven't ever had a problem with my cards.
