Hi,

I'm in the process to upgrade the firmware of my 1D. Unfortunately, when I try to download it from canon's website, it says that it has already been downloaded for my camera :(
Since this is a second hand camera, I don't have the file.
I need it because the 1D has problem with flash I use with it ( +- 3stop underexposure)
So as I'm going on vacation in 15 days, I can't send it back to canon ( on top of that, I had a previous bad experience with canon repair service : 5 months to get my 70-200 IS back !! )
So if anyone has got a 1D firmware, I would really appreciate a copy ;)

Thanks in advance,

MikeG

What is the exact message you are getting? The Canon website has no way of knowing that the firmware has already been downloaded for you camera unless what it's referring to is the fact that the file already exists on your computer, in which case, you should just be able to overwrite it.

Does your camera show the same firmware version they're offering on the website? If you show 1.4.0 (latest on the BeBit site), then re-installing it won't really change anything. And I didn't see a flash underexposure problem listed as one of the fixes for that upgrade. I have to ask - have you double-checked your FEC settings?

For the 1D, they ask for the camera serial number. Dunno why they think it matters; maybe if you installed it on a DR it'd unleash even more power than the Wasia and Undutchables did.

Yes, I've wondered about that myself. It's not like one can download the firmware and then install it on the 10D or DReb. It's the same when I try to download firmware for my 1DmkII. Maybe they're afraid someone is going to reverse engineer the firmware and come out with a hack for the 1D series cameras so that they can do something like, maybe, B&W shots like the 20D and the XT can and Canon really wanted to save that as a future feature enhancement.

Yes,you've to enter the body serial number so that they check if you've already downloaded it...

I'm thinking about this solution as you'd do with a pc (electronics is alway the same) : try to reload driver to make it work...

And about the FEC, of course it isn't set to underexpose the shot ...

Thanks anyway ;)

The 420EX has had a reputation of under-exposing with the 1D. The 550EX does not. Don't jump to blame the camera, it is probably a flash issue. The Sigma flashes, except for the 500DG also have some degree of exposure errors.

With the 1DmkII firmware download, they also ask for the SN but I know for a fact that they don't check the download against a previous download I've already done. I just tried it now and it let me download the same firmware update I download a couple of weeks ago. Are you sure the Canon site isn't letting you download the firmware because it's already been downloaded? If so, they must have done away with it with the mark IIs.

3-stops under-exposure means a lot. Have you compared the photos taken with the flash and without the flash? Does the camera really syn with the flash?

Hello Mike,

I had the same problem regarding downloading 1D firmware. Your 1D like mine must be a post Jul 02 camera where firmware 1.4 was installed from new.

I made up what I thought would be a early type of serial no, I started number 015 and made up the remaining number and I could then download the update, about 2.5 Mb.

Should work for you.

Roy

I've tried to reload the firmware but it desn't work. It seems that if the firmware is older or the same as the one in use, it's impossible to reload...
