Is there any way to disable the "beauty light" on a 550ex w/20D when you hit the DOF preview?

You mean the modeling light? Yes, switch off the flash. :)
(Not sure if there's a custom function to do that but it might be worth a look in your manual to find out).

HAHAHA sorry, it is early and i haven't had enough coffee!!

yes modeling light. I know i can turn the flash off, and usually what i do is keep it pressed down. I just want to find a way to completly diable it, i don't think it is possible

i don't think it's possible either... but why keep pressing the DOF preview button?

Macro shots, that close DOF is rough and hard to get w/o using the preview. A lot of times it is on location at a weddings (shots of the rings) I am usually in need of every ounce of light (can i measure light in ounces?... hehe) that i can get.

Aha! I think I've found something the the 420EX does better than the 550EX or the 580EX. The 420EX has the modeling light, too, but with the 420EX, you can turn off the modeling light. This might be a good reason to downgrade your 550EX to a 420EX. ;)

as far as I can tell the modeling light on the 420 only works when it is in slave mode. if have slave mode off the modeling light doesn't work.

Yes, I know. That's why I said (tongue-in-cheek) that the 420 has an "on-off" switch for the modeling light whereas the 550 and the 580 do not . ;)
