Since there are other threads asking about the meaning of our names and our ages, I thought I'd add another one.

What do you do for a living.

I'll start. I'm a senior strategic planner in a major corporation.

In operate a small IT company. In other words, I try to as little as possible and have the real job done by my people. Otherwise I would not have time or taking pictures, shooting, scuba and a lot of other funny stuff :)

Hi Rob,
If I would guess I'd say a lot of people here are in IT or IT related work. Frankly, I don't see the connection between IT and photography. True that digital photography uses PCs, but still.

Rob612

Frankly, I don't see the connection between IT and photography.

Neither do I, but IMHO its just a fact that those of us that work in the IT business have been advantaging of some of the skills that are related to their job, thus making life simpler. A non-PC user or even a standard average - those that have problems in copying a file to another drive, for example, and we all know that those types do exist - has much more problems in handling the complexity of digital photography. An experienced user - not to mention the pros, of course - finds everything much much easer. I mean, an experienced guy has to learn everything about digital photo - but not about the use of the PC. Also, learning a new software (i.e. PSCS) is much simpler.

A non-pc user has to learn both worlds, and that can be really hard.

What's your opinion ?

aam1234
21st of April 2005 (Thu), 11:45
Agree with you, and you've raised good points. Now the connection between photography and IT is clearer, especially about learning new software.

I am currently the Health Fitness Direcotr for a non profit, but have only been doing this for less than a year. It is a big chnage of work environments, but thats why I do photography and other IT/ marketing work on the side.

I was also in IT before the switch, as I have a MIS degree, but got tired of the grind and tech slowdown of the company I was the Affiliate Marketing Manager for. We did online pharmaceutical sales, but with new regulations from the FDA, the market got really small and profits decreased.

The combination of IT and Photography works well for me. Setting up my own website and such with databases and servers, wasn't too much work, but for a non IT person, they would be lost. Along with the marketing of a personal business is a major key to finding clients and developing leads and trying to start a local buzz about my photographs, with the niche market.

aam1234, all the photos are taken by myself or the company owner. Most were taken with a Canon Rebel XS and later scanned by a CanoScan LiDE 20. These photo's were taken near the beginning of my serious interest in photography. I tried to duplicate poses and compositions that I found in other company's brochures.

Now we use my Digital Rebel. When I bring it to work, everybody else says "here we go again. Alan won't be doing anything all day but taking pictures". Then thay all expect printouts of themselves posted in the lunchroom (with alterations of course). My favourite one was cut & pasting one of the machine operators in a pose with two of the other three stooges. That stayed up for months!

This is a great thread aam1234. It's incredible the varying backgrounds POTNers have. I found myself very intrigued with this topic. Thanks everyone.

I beleive the correlation has less to do with Photography,. and more to do with "Forum users"

I too have an IT aspect to my job at the theatre,. (I manage the computer systems for the office 100%) and thus do manage sepnd a good deal of time in front of the PC.

Thus my feeling is that we get a larger percentage of PC related jobs on this forum... or any forum for that matter,. when compared to the actual number of photo enthusiasts in the world.

It's incredible the varying backgrounds POTNers have.

The name ajbalazic gave for POTN members (POTNers) sounds very cool. What do you say we adopt it and make it kind of official.

Im currently in a phase of transition, from Truck Driver to Destruction Supervisor.
I destroy things for a living :D :D www.onlinesec.co.nz

I believe my work, Westpac, use DDS.
Does that mean I may see you? I'll try and be nice. hehe.

My job is all around PCs. Some basics, and some slightly more difficult, but as I'm the only PC literate person, I have to do every nationwide upgrade, and technical issues. Still easy work. The previous guy in my role, was promoted from Customer Service work, to pure analyst and part of the help desk for all the technical computer problems. Something I could possibly get into, with a bit extra money for those L lens. :D

People actually pay money for my opinion on how they should set up their CRM (Customer relationship management) systems. That is, when I am not busy reading and posting at POTN.

Best regards,

I've just finished a CRM setup for my team:(

I fully understand why someone would pay:confused:

Then we could blame all the delays, errors, misfits, lost data, disorganized pages etc on the consultant:lol:

Actually went not bad, considering it was on top of my regular workload.

I wish I could buck the trend; Systems Administrator (IT).

If it plugs in to an electrical socket I'm responsible for it; but my focus is in IT Systems (Novell & Microsoft Network Administration and all the hardware/software that touches the network).

I still hope to make it as a professional State Fair Corn Dog taste tester some day...

I spend most of my time as my daughters over-protective parent (which mostly consists of me chasing her around making sure she doesn't hurt herself since she just started walking all the time recently). I have an overwhelming respect for single moms/parents, it's hard work! :) To actually pay the bills I work in IT for a Casino/Resort mainly working with ibm as/400. I'm slowly on my way to a career change as an RN.

Pornography Merchant............

Okay, not quite, I am the Director of Operations and Customer Service for a large convenience/gas/restaurant chain in Canada.

My office gets a lot of complaints about the magazine covers on display at the check out racks, which have main stream titles like Cosmo, FM, etc.

The publishers seem to be in a war to out do each other for shocking pictures or racy headlines. A few years ago, we moved the "men's sophisticates" magazines (there's an oxymoron!) behind a blinder on the top shelves of the magazine section to protect sensibilities.

After hours, I can be found prowling the local hardware stores for the next tool or supplies I need for the current DIY project (no DIY disasters here though, strick rules of engagment are only one inside and one outside project at a time!).
