View Full Version : Nikon D70s not much different than D70.. (similar to 300D and 350D)

I just got a heads up to look at the D70s and by looking at the specs, it doesn't look very different than the D70 (Still 6mp). I know that the Digital Rebel (300D) had probably been an eyesore for them but I would had thought they would had come out with something at least better (at least 8mp...). The Rebel XT is very similar to the Rebel once hacked but at least it has 8mp. I am pretty surprised that most of the improvements are very minor...
Glad I kept my Rebel!.. :)
• Improved Auto Focus Speed (Canon had this for many years)
• Improved Focus Tracking (Same as above comment)
• Larger 2.0" LCD Screen (wow.. 0.2 more... than Rebel XP? Didn't Sony's point and shoot already have something bigger?)
• Higher Speed Continuous Shooting
• Easier Menu System (Less digging?)
• New Higher Capacity Li-Ion Battery (???)
• Accepts MC-DC1 Remote Cord (You can build a remote cord for the Digital Rebel for $1)

Strange. It was my understanding that the D70's main competition has always been the Canon 300D (dRebel). Since Canon just upped the ante with the new 350D (smaller, stronger, faster and 8mp), I'm surprised Nikon isn't, at the very least, bumping up the resolution on the D70s from 6mp to 8mp, as Canon has done. From what I've read, even the new Nikon D50 still only uses a 6mp sensor.
...and nowadays, 6mp for a digital SLR seems, well, sort of, low! :)

Bigger buffer for bursts. If you want to sort through them, you can now shoot for 48 sec. at 3 fps (144 shots x 3 MB = buy some more memory boys and girls!).

6mp really isn't that low. and most people I have talked to that went from a 300d to a 20d say they cant tell the difference in pictures. I heard about the D50 also....I think they kept it 6mp because it is a cheaper version of the D70. You know kinda like the 10D and 300D. Anyways read up on Nikon's new WB policy and you will see where this company is goin.

At least the file sizes are still small (since it's only 6mp). ;)
I acutally really like the nikon products, but I was too tempted by canon's offering of all the "L" glass to pass it up. I've purchased one non-canon digital camera and it was a mistake (pentax optio S4i). Even my SD200 way out-perfoms the pentax (with 1 less MP). If my canon lenses fit nikon bodies, I would at least be tempted to give them a try...

I made that upgrade last year and I agree that there is very little difference in picture quality. I do enjoy, however, the greater latitude for cropping the extra pixels afford.
I have found that I do get a higher percentage of keepers with the 20D ... (via more accurate and faster autofocus, more accurate exposure metering, possibly increased dynamic range, increased flexibility of settings).

I think I find the D50 more interesting, they finally have a camera selling as low in the price range as the Rebel, plus it has the same sensor as the D70/D70s.
I do like that Nikon has offered a firmwire upgrade to make the D70 almost like the D70s. An upgraded legal firm wire for the 300D-Rebel D giving it custom function like the 10D or XT would be appreciated by me.

I agree that the SD200 is probably better than the pentax. I still use my s230 and it outperforms the pentax in almost every way. I always get a laugh (have the last laugh) after people that bought the pentax or sony would tout how good, etc, etc., but when during picture taking time they stood there waiting and fustrated for their unit to refresh and I am already having fun snapping away leaving them in the dust. Most fun is afterwards., the picture quality and flash for canon seems to be pretty powerful even for a little camera...
As for Canon lens fitting on Nikon body., I think Kodak makes a similar thing. Correct me if I am wrong but I think Kodak has 2 different models. one would fit Canon mount and another would use Nikon mount. Not too sure about how good their processing is though.
