Off to Spitzbergen

Hi all
I am off on a boat trip from oban, via st kilda and the faroe islands to spitzbergen. Dead excited but need some advice.:lol:

Do i need a tripod and if so any recommendations regarding something that is going to be ok for taking on a plan?

I also have a 100-400mm lens - does this affect tripod selection adn if so any tips please

Sorry having an equipment panic moment as trip is 5 wks away (last minute opportunity!)

You said you also have a 100-400 lens. What's the first lens? I'd say that if you have a lens with IS, you will probably be ok without a tripod, provided it isn't one of the "big" lenses (300 2.8, 400 2.8, 500 f4, 600 f4, or 800mm). Any lens smaller than that, with IS, and you should be okay handheld, unless you put a 1.4x or a 2x teleconverter on it. Any lens over 200mm with no IS and you really should have the tripod.
