I stuck my cat on a stool, and shot a pic before she jumped off. I just repleted this until I got a few pics taken.

I've found that it often helps to have an assistant who can somehow get the cat's attention, so that the cat is looking towards the camera.
http://www.itsanadventure.com/postimages/Bebe_64015.jpg
Or at least looking somewhere near the camera, rather than having the cat look away from the camera.

For both shots, my wife was behind me or off to one side, making noise and waving something shiny.

^^ I have to disagree on some shots -- take it photo by photo -- but some of my favorite of animals are them not looking directly at the camera.
Of the top three, I'd say the bottom is my favorite, although I love his facial expression in the first!

That she is, I'm trying to put her on a diet. But, it's not easy.

+1 for that, not too keen on the 'stage managed' look of some pet shots. Let them be themselves, apart from that, you have to factor in the fly buzzin' away 1/2 a mile down the road that your cat will insist on killing :p

i loved the second shot from tgamron,
it never fails to amaze me how you can change the whole meaning of a situation, just by changing a few things,
now it's a cat ready fro the kill or cat from hell should i say. like the color of the eyes though, not too keen on the lighting, you may have used some sort of a jungle or bushy setting to make it appear like a car is getting ready for the kill like a commando, with half light on face . ( it's an idea)

My favorite trick is to catch the cat's attention with my camera strap. For example:

@Seamaster...
Close! She's a Norwegian Forest Cat. They're cousins :) I love these "big" cats, they're so majestic and not your average cat. SUPER soft too.

My 3 girls: Missy, Chloe and Roxy, respectivly. They are learning to turn away from me when I point the camera at them...the nerve ;) ! Recently I've been trying to use my MF lens of them, what was I thinking...

They're pals, I swear they are!
The orange one always gets interested when I point a camera at him - and promptly runs up to inspect. Most of the good shots I get of him are when he's asleep.
I also like it better when they aren't looking straight at the camera - it makes them seem a little more cat-like to be engaged in something else (eating, sleeping, playing).

I find it interesting that both of my dals will sit forever and let me photograph them...but my cat just humors me with a shot or two! ;-)

The first is our evil kitty (Boo Boo Kitty) who only tolerates us living in her house (taken pre-Canon but I still like the shot).
The second I may have posted on this forum, but I'm not sure. This is Sweet Pea in my closet.
Finally, there is Deezi, the mysterious Lynx Point Siamese of the amazing blue eyes.
