I've always wanted to "publish" some sort of B&W photo and highlight some color in it. This is my first attempt at using good old PS to do something artsy. Comments most welcomed.

Pretty simple actually...I copied the entire color image and saved it as another name. Then I removed the color of the original image to make it B&W. Then I went to the new image, used the lasso tool (whatever it is called) to outline the orange crayon. Once I had it selected, I copied it edit/copy...then I went to the B&W image and pasted what I copied. This basically creates a second layer. Layer one is the entire B&W photo and layer two is simply the orange crayon. I then positioned layer two (orange crayon) over the crayon in the B&W photo so that the B&W orange crayon wasn't showing. Then I flatted the image, saved as jpeg...and poof...magic!

Nice shot, very creative. I think a brighter color like yellow would have made it stand out more. I find the orange kind of dull.

Very nice. Is it me, or are those crayons leaning to the left? Maybe that was part of the plan...

yes, they are slightly to the left...the bookshelf they were on is a bit warped. This is the first shot I ever took with my 300D...before I realized that you also have to pay attention to horizontal and vertical lines when shooting. Nice pick up.

It can be any shot you want, but my guess is that you'd want something that has decent colors to work with a something close up with tight composition. Doing a landscape shot similar to this might not work unless it was a red wagon in the middle of a field or something.

I know, i've just done one with a stem of bluebells but it looked bad because while the background had gone to black and white it did'nt look right with the blue of the flowers.
I think it was you who tried to explain to me on how to achieve this effect and i ahve you step by step instructions on how to do it.
Cheers for that and now i can do the effect....
